From Underwear Sprint to Stardom: Austin Abrams on Chasing Dreams with Clooney and Pitt

Imagine sprinting across the bustling streets of Manhattan in nothing but your underwear and socks, racing against the clock while two of Hollywood’s biggest stars, Brad Pitt and George Clooney, pursue you relentlessly. For actor Austin Abrams, this scenario was not just a wild dream—it was a scene from his latest film, “Wolfs.” Describing it as one of the easiest career choices he has ever made, Abrams reflects on the experience with awe and gratitude during a recent video call from his home in Los Angeles, where a 2001: A Space Odyssey poster serves as a backdrop.

At just 28, Abrams is no stranger to the glitz and glamour of the entertainment industry, having made a name for himself in projects like “Paper Towns,” “Chemical Hearts,” and the popular series “Euphoria.” However, “Wolfs” represents a significant milestone as his first major big-budget film. In this action-comedy directed by Jon Watts, known for helming the Spider-Man trilogy for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Abrams plays a character simply known as ‘The Kid.’

“Wolfs,” an Apple TV+ project, has already set records, becoming the streaming service’s most-watched movie within days of its release. Abrams quickly became a fan favorite, delivering a memorable performance that had him sharing the screen—and sometimes even overshadowing—his illustrious co-stars, Brad Pitt and George Clooney. A standout moment in the film includes a humorous scene where The Kid offers a frantic explanation for his predicament: waking up in a hotel room beside a district attorney, surrounded by a bag of drugs—a sequence that Abrams says is iconic.

When discussing his character’s inspiration, Abrams notes, “He’s called ‘The Kid,’ and it reflects his youthful essence. While playing him, I wanted to channel that part of ourselves we often suppress as we mature—innocence and vulnerability that we naturally guard against the harsh realities of life.”

Working with Pitt and Clooney was nothing short of a dream come true for Abrams, who speaks of them with great admiration. “They are incredibly charismatic, warm, and wise,” he enthuses, recounting the dynamic on set. For him, working alongside the duo, known for their magnetic presence on and off-screen, felt like stepping into the world of Hollywood legends. Clooney, in particular, impressed Abrams with his unparalleled storytelling ability, a trait he admires deeply.

During filming, Abrams received valuable advice from Pitt, which resonated with him profoundly: “Brad explained his selection process for roles, emphasizing that he chooses projects based on a genuine connection. He believes that if something inspires him, it will resonate with others too. It’s a philosophy I’ve since tried to incorporate into my own career—focusing on projects that truly motivate and inspire me.”

The camaraderie between Pitt and Clooney is legendary, a friendship that has captivated Hollywood for years. Their reunification in “Wolfs,” 16 years after their last collaboration in “Burn After Reading,” demonstrates their enduring chemistry. Inspired by their partnership, Abrams contemplates which of his friends he might collaborate with in a similar movie. “I’ve been fortunate to work with some amazing talents like Lewis Pullman, Alex Wolff, and Nat Wolff. Working repeatedly with people you admire makes the creative process so enriching,” he muses.

Aside from his role in “Wolfs,” Abrams captured audiences as Ethan in “Euphoria.” Despite uncertainties about his future in the series after the dramatic breakup between Ethan and Kat, Abrams holds fond memories of the show’s innovative environment. “Sam Levinson’s creative vision and the team’s dedication made it a unique experience, reminiscent of dynamic film sets from the ’70s,” he reminisces.

Looking ahead, Abrams is excited about his involvement in the anticipated film “Weapons,” directed by Zach Cregger, where he’ll star alongside Julia Garner and Josh Brolin. There’s also speculation about a possible sequel to “Wolfs,” with Abrams hopeful about continuing the adventure alongside Pitt and Clooney. “There’s talk of a follow-up, and if I get to join them again, I’d leap at the chance.”

For those eager to see Abrams in action, “Wolfs” is currently streaming on Apple TV+, offering a blend of comedy, action, and the undeniable allure of its iconic cast.
