British actor Paapa Essiedu, best known for his standout role in I May Destroy You, is reportedly in talks to portray Professor Severus Snape in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series, according to multiple sources. While an official deal has yet to be confirmed, insiders suggest Essiedu has been offered the iconic part, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Snape, the sharp-tongued potions master of Hogwarts, was famously brought to life by the late Alan Rickman in Warner Bros.’ eight-film series. In HBO’s adaptation, the character is set to feature prominently in the show’s first season, which will closely follow J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Essiedu’s potential casting has already stirred excitement, particularly as HBO has committed to assembling a diverse cast for the series — a notable departure from the films, which faced criticism for their predominantly white core ensemble. Known for his theatrical roots with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Essiedu has delivered acclaimed performances in productions of Hamlet and King Lear and has appeared in Murder on the Orient Express, Men, and Gangs of London.
The Harry Potter series, slated for a 2026 debut, aims to be a “faithful adaptation” of Rowling’s books, introducing the beloved story to a new generation while maintaining the original films as a central part of the franchise. HBO stated, “We will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
Francesca Gardiner serves as writer and executive producer, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes. Executive producers include Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman.
