WPL 2024: 500 women to get free walk-in for season opener between MI and DC in Bengaluru

Anticipation is surging through Bengaluru as the city gears up for the spectacular commencement of the second season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The tournament kickstarts with a thrilling opener on February 23, a Friday, featuring a high-octane clash between Mumbai Indians, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, and Delhi Capitals, captained by Meg Lanning. With tickets for the Bengaluru matches having gone on sale a week prior, fans have shown an enthusiastic response, eager to witness women’s cricket at its finest.

In a heartening move indicative of the inclusive spirit that cricket embodies, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced complimentary access for the first 500 women who walk in to watch the season’s inaugural match. The official WPL Twitter feed has broadcasted this generous initiative. Those availing of the offer will find their seats in the P3 Annexe stand, with the opening ceremony set to begin at 6:30 PM IST, and the first delivery following an hour later.

The gala opening ceremony promises to be replete with glamour and glitz, boasting appearances by Bollywood heavyweights such as Shahrukh Khan, Varun Dhawan, Kartik Aaryan, and Siddharth Malhotra. Nevertheless, the real stars of the evening will be the athletes, with Mumbai and Delhi – finalists from the last season – poised to compete at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in what promises to be a riveting showcase of skill and sportsmanship.

Aside from trailblazers Harmanpreet Kaur and Meg Lanning, the cricket field will be graced by other stellar players like Amelia Kerr, Marizanne Kapp, Shafali Verma, and Jemimah Rodrigues. England’s Nat Sciver Brunt is another addition to the galaxy of international stars. With each team determined to commence the season with a win, fans are guaranteed a match layered with strategy, talent, and competitive zeal. Mumbai Indians might have an edge with two wins in three previous matches. However, Delhi Capitals’ formidable lineup posits them as strong contenders capable of upsetting their opponents.

The current composition of both teams showcases an impressive depth of talent and experience. Mumbai Indians’ roster features standout names such as Hayley Matthews, Yastika Bhatia, Nat Sciver-Brunt, and Amelia Kerr. Bolstering their firepower are Amanjot Kaur, Pooja Vastrakar, and Shabnim Ismail, alongside potential young stars such as Jintimani Kalita and Amandeep Kaur. Additions like Chloe Tryon, Issy Wong, and others round out a diverse squad poised for dominance.

On the other side, Delhi Capitals’ lineup mirrors the strength of their rivals. Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues join forces with international sensations like Marizanne Kapp and Alice Capsey. England’s veteran spinner Laura Harris and all-rounder Jess Jonassen add to the team’s strategic depth. With Taniya Bhatia taking the wicket-keeping duties and precise bowlers like Radha Yadav and Poonam Yadav, Delhi’s team is nothing short of formidable.

This fresh season of the WPL is not merely a testament to the burgeoning appeal of international women’s cricket; it also serves as a platform celebrating women’s engagement with the sport, both on and off the field. As the teams prepare to battle it out, Bengaluru is ready to play host to a cricketing fiesta that promises to blend athletic excellence with festive merrymaking, setting the tone for a league that uplifts, inspires, and entertains.
