A Nostalgic Elegance: Collage’s Exhibition Marries Vintage Jewellery with Art and Textiles in Chennai

In a blend of antiquity and artistry, Collage, a renowned fashion and luxury store in Chennai, embraces its 20th anniversary with a unique retrospective. In a fusion of past and present, it is collaborating with Mumbai’s distinguished boutique Beg Borrow Steal to offer a collection of antique jewellery, art, and vintage textiles and accessories. Set to be held this weekend, the showcase is described by Collage’s founder, Lata Madhu, as embodying the “chaotic, diverse and vibrant vibe of a flea market.”

Set in the heart of Chennai, Collage specializes in premium fashion, housing not just clothing but an array of accessories and art. On the occasion of its 20th anniversary, this celebration is a testimony to Madhu’s commitment to distinctive style and quality. It’s here, against the backdrop of Collage’s bold design ethos influenced by the architectural charm of old Madras and European pre-war flair, that the event unfolds.

The founders of Beg Borrow Steal, Pranav Sood and Krisna Krishnankutty, established their boutique in the trendy neighborhood of Bandra in 2018. Their partnership with Collage has produced a hand-picked selection of vintage jewellery acclaimed for its meticulous craftsmanship. “Our jewellery collection is a tribute to the allure of bygone eras,” Pranav explains, “showcasing stunning pieces from the 1960s and 1970s that are chosen for their exquisite craftsmanship and unique design.”

Jewellery aficionados are invited to revel in around 50 elegant pieces from high-end brands such as Chanel, Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Monet, Lanvin, Dolce and Gabbana, Trifari, and more. Each item is a spellbinding narrative of the past—a story complemented by Madhu’s spotlight on statement jewellery by Givenchy and Chanel. She highlights gold-plated jewellery in mint condition and Chanel bags adorned with distinctive tapestries, capturing the spirit of an era.

Lata and Pranav both emphasize that each piece of vintage at the exhibition has its own tale. The event celebrates the historical diversity of textiles sourced worldwide, and each is accompanied by a tag detailing its creation date and the season it embodies. Pranav is particularly proud of a 30-year-old mosaic from Italy, one of the unique treasures in the collection.

For those with an appetite for both branded and non-branded pieces, the choices abound. A curated selection of 30 sunglasses, brooches, and Christian art are on display along with 30 to 40 textiles, enhancing the array of around 100 non-branded items. For enthusiasts desiring a touch of international history, a handful of exclusive pieces await.

This retrospective was curated over three months, necessitated by the intricate nature of the exhibit and the juxtaposition of classical with quirky elements. Lata sheds light on their process, “The character of this event, its setting, keeping both Pranav’s and my vision in mind, the exhibit is a marriage of classical and quirky pieces. The idea is to unite people in conversations over vintage fashion and global art forms.”

The exhibition is a not-to-miss event for lovers of vogue and heritage, a testament to the timeless appeal of traditional elegance. Products are available starting at ₹7,500 for textiles, inviting not only connoisseurs of luxury fashion but also those who wish to own a piece of history. The show runs from March 22 to 23 at Collage, No.6, Rutland Gate, Nungambakkam, Chennai. It promises to be a treasure trove of rarity and elegance, a celebration of fashion’s enduring romance with nostalgia.
