The Hindu Lit for Life | Engage with maths and data driven narratives at the mischief of math workshop

The only true universal language is mathematics. There have been many mathematicians who have tried to simplify and make the use of numbers and equations fun. Author Nivedita Ganesh attempts to do the same with her book The Mischief of Math: Short Stories of Clowns, Contortionists, and Court-Jesters, which is an insightful exploration of mathematical theorems.
At The Hindu Lit For Life 2025, she and her co-author Inavamsi Enaganti will be conducting a workshop titled The Mischief of Math: Paradoxes, Patterns and Life’s Little Logic Tricks to help deal with data-driven narratives in a fun and easy way. “A lot of different people deal with data in their lives. Entrepreneurs, economists, data scientists and even students have to deal with data driven narratives, and this is a structure that makes it really fun,” says Nivedita.
The workshop will take participants (aged 15 to 25) through an enactment of a live auction. “We will use live polls to look at paradoxes and voting systems,” she adds. Throughout the workshop, the book will be consulted and activities will be played out. Tutorials on ethics in AI, data-detection, paradoxes and biases, and busting myths from real life are just some of the topics that will be touched upon. “We will provide tools to the participants to identify biases and challenges in their daily life that mislead them,” she adds.
The aim of the workshop is to instil confidence and curiosity to engage with data in any field. “We want to create a fresh perspective on math and its applications,” she says.
