Axar Patel to Captain Delhi Capitals in Rishabh Pant’s Sit-out Against RCB

As the Indian Premier League’s excitement surges ahead, the Delhi Capitals are faced with an unexpected captaincy shift. Ricky Ponting, the head coach of Delhi Capitals, has had to designate a new leader for the team’s upcoming critical encounter against Royal Challengers Bangalore after their regular skipper Rishabh Pant faced disciplinary action.

The clash scheduled for Sunday, May 12, will be pivotal for the Capitals as they strive to secure a playoff spot in this intensely competitive season. However, Pant will not be part of the action at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru due to a one-match suspension handed down by the IPL governing council, in response to his team’s recurrent slow over-rate offenses.

According to recent reports, Ponting has placed his trust in the expertise of Axar Patel. The seasoned all-rounder is set to don the captain’s hat for this high-stakes game. This crucial decision arose just hours following the official confirmation of Pant’s suspension, which was a result of the third slow over-rate offense by the Delhi Capitals this season.

The statement from the IPL’s governing council read, “Mr Rishabh Pant, Captain, Delhi Capitals has been fined and suspended for one match for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match 56 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on May 07, 2024.”

The governing body elaborated that Pant’s third transgression led to a fine of INR 30 Lac and the suspension that put his leadership role on hold temporarily. Moreover, the incident drew fines for the rest of the playing squad, including the Impact Player, who have each been fined INR 12 Lac or 50 percent of their match fee, whichever is lower.

Currently, the Delhi Capitals hold a precarious spot in the race to the playoffs, occupying the fifth position on the points table. Their tally stands at 12 points after 12 matches, courtesy of six victories. The Capitals are left with two more games before the playoff curtains close – against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants. A win in both these fixtures not only brightens their chance for a playoff berth but also derails the momentum of RCB and hampers LSG’s push for 16 points.

Axar Patel’s leadership role arrives owing to his consistently stellar performances for the Delhi Capitals. This season has seen Axar contributing significantly with the bat and ball, amassing 164 runs and clinching 10 wickets to date. The previous season as well saw him accumulate runs and take wickets, demonstrating his value as an all-round cricketer. Last year, he scored 283 runs and took 11 wickets.

This development throws an unexpected twist to Delhi Capitals’ campaign. With Axar Patel at the helm for the next match, fans and enthusiasts will eagerly watch to see how his leadership influences the team’s strategy and performance. The stakes are high, and every ball will count as the Capitals look to outmaneuver their opponents and step closer to the coveted IPL playoffs.
