Ryan Gosling is reportedly in negotiations to lead a standalone Star Wars film directed by Shawn Levy. Known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverineand The Adam Project, Levy has been developing the project since 2022, with a script by frequent collaborator Jonathan Tropper.
While details about the plot remain under wraps, sources indicate the film will be separate from the Skywalker Saga, exploring new territory within the Star Wars universe. It is unclear whether the story will feature iconic elements like the Jedi or Sith, but it is confirmed to be a standalone entry.
Gosling’s involvement appears to have accelerated the project, which could begin production as early as this fall. Levy, who was previously eyeing a boy band movie at Paramount, has shifted focus to the Star Wars feature following Gosling’s interest. If finalised, this will mark a rare occasion where an A-list actor leads a Star Wars film, a franchise historically known for launching new talent.
Gosling’s potential casting ties into long-standing rumors, as his name was floated for a role in the franchise as far back as 2013. Recently seen in The Fall Guy, the actor has completed work on Project Hail Mary, another space-themed movie.
Levy will produce the film under his 21 Laps banner alongside Kathleen Kennedy and Lucasfilm. With cameras potentially rolling soon, the project could become the next Star Wars installment to head into production, with a release date yet to be announced.
