Cricket Australia Confirms ‘India A’ Matches Against Australia A as Precursors to Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25

Cricket Australia (CA) made an exciting announcement on Tuesday, May 28, setting the stage for what promises to be an electrifying Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. The apex cricket body confirmed that two fixtures between ‘India A’ and ‘Australia A’ would serve as a prelude to the much-anticipated five-match Test series between India and Australia. The tour games will be held ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, commencing with a four-day match in Mackay starting on October 31. This will be followed by a second clash at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) from November 7. To further hone their skills ahead of the Test series, the visiting Indian team will also engage in an intra-squad match at the WACA ground in Perth from November 15 to 17.

“A prelude to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy this summer will see Australia A taking on India A as the two top-ranked Test nations prepare for their hugely anticipated showdown,” read a statement from CA on social media platform Twitter, which is now known as X. Cricket Australia also confirmed that both these A matches will carry first-class status, adding a layer of significance to the contests.

Peter Roach, CA Head of Cricket Operations and Scheduling, emphasized how these matches would enrich the upcoming cricketing activities. “To have the Australia A versus India A games running simultaneously with the women’s ODIs, and being preceded by two significant A matches, will be terrific for our fans,” Roach stated. “Hosting these A matches at the upgraded Great Barrier Reef Arena and the MCG grants them significant status and provides wonderful opportunities for players from both sides to stake their claims for selection.”

This tour marks India’s return to Australian soil for a Test series after a gap of four years, and the first time since their historic triumph in the 2020-21 series. The two preparatory matches will offer the Indian team an excellent platform to fine-tune their strategies and acclimate to the Australian conditions before the blockbuster Test series kicks off in Perth. Notably, this will be the first time in over three decades that the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will consist of five Tests. India last won the series in Australia during the 2020-21 tour and has claimed two-two victories both at home and away, each with a margin of 2-1, while Australia has not lifted the trophy since 2017.

Fans and cricket enthusiasts are eager to relive the historic and intense competitions that these two cricketing giants have become synonymous with. The significance of this series cannot be overstated, given the evolving dynamics of Test cricket and the emerging talents from both nations that show promise to add new chapters to this storied rivalry.
