The West Indies Cricket Board has announced a formidable 15-player squad for their highly anticipated three-match Test tour of England scheduled for July 2023. This squad marks the return of two key players: veteran all-rounder Jason Holder and the promising fast bowler Jayden Seales.
Previously missing from the West Indies’ Test squad in their tour of Australia earlier this month, Holder and Seales are now back in action. Holder had made the decision to opt out of the Australian tour to participate in the ILT20, as a strategic move to prepare himself for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. However, his plans were thwarted when he sustained an unspecified injury recently, ruling him out of the T20 World Cup. Despite this setback, Holder’s impressive performances in the ongoing County Championship with Worcestershire have earned him a place back in the squad.
Meanwhile, Seales, who was sidelined due to a shoulder injury that kept him from being available for selection for the Australian tour, has shown remarkable form in the ongoing County season for Sussex. His bowling prowess has made him the leading wicket-taker in Division Two of the County Championship, a feat that has not gone unnoticed by the selectors.
In a significant move, the selection panel decided to drop opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul from the squad. Chanderpaul’s performance during the Australian tour was lackluster, where he managed only 31 runs across four innings. His position will be taken by Mikyle Louis, who emerged as the leading run-scorer in the 2023-24 season of the West Indies Championship.
The touring party will also include 19-year-old Isai Thorne, who will travel with the squad as a development player. However, Thorne will not be part of the official 15-member squad.
Desmond Haynes, the chief selector for West Indies, expressed his optimism about the squad’s potential to perform strongly in England, a venue where the West Indies have not won a Test series since 1988. “The squad has been shaped with both experience and emerging talent, ensuring a strong balance as we face the challenge of playing in English conditions. Over the past year, our red-ball program has continued to develop,” said Haynes.

The West Indies squad heading to England is as follows: Kraigg Brathwaite (c), Alick Athanaze, Joshua Da Silva (wk), Jason Holder, Kavem Hodge, Tevin Imlach, Alzarri Joseph (vice-capt), Shamar Joseph, Mikyle Louis, Zachary McCaskie, Kirk McKenzie, Gudakesh Motie, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, and Kevin Sinclair. Isai Thorne will accompany the squad as a development player.
