Kohli and Sharma to Open for India as Jaiswal and Kuldeep Miss Out in T20 World Cup 2024 Opener Against Ireland

India step into the T20 World Cup 2024 arena with a highly anticipated clash against Ireland at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 5, Wednesday. This match marks an important start for both teams in the tournament. Skipper Rohit Sharma brought good fortune by winning the toss and opting to bowl first, a decision that promises to add an interesting strategy to the game.

In a notable change to the lineup, India will go ahead without the services of Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Kuldeep Yadav, and Yuzvendra Chahal. Strikingly, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to open the batting for India, a combination that brings both experience and aggression to the fore. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been making headlines with his vibrant performances in recent months, will have to watch from the sidelines this time.

The Indian team boasts a robust Playing XI, stacked with batters all the way down to Ravindra Jadeja at number seven. This lineup affords seven bowling options, with all-rounders like Shivam Dube and Hardik Pandya adding further versatility. Kuldeep Yadav, who was initially pegged as India’s first-choice spinner, surprisingly does not feature in the playing eleven. The selectors have chosen to strengthen the pace attack with three specialist pacers.

Speaking at the toss, Rohit Sharma shared his thoughts on the team’s lineup and their preparation for the first game of the tournament. “We’re going to bowl. Preparations have been alright. Have been managing ourselves in these new conditions. It has been challenging but we are all professionals. We played on a similar pitch and do know what to expect a little bit. I know it’s going to be slightly different from what we’re used to. But that’s what the sport is.

. Not sure about the conditions too much, so thought having a target in front of us would be good. Guys missing out are Kuldeep, Sanju, Jaiswal and one more,” Rohit stated.

On the other side, Ireland have also made crucial selections, leaving out Ross Adair, Craig Young, Neil Rock, and Graham Hume for this pivotal opener against India. Ireland’s captain, Paul Stirling, expressed optimism about assessing the early conditions and highlighted the team’s preparation phase in the Netherlands. “Coming with pretty good prep, we were in Netherlands recently (for the tri-series). We’ve got plenty of match winners in our side, want them to show up on the day. We’re looking to assess conditions early,” Stirling commented.

India and Ireland find themselves pitted against each other in Group A of the tournament, sharing the group with formidable teams like Pakistan, USA, and Canada. This match against Ireland not only sets the tone for the tournament but also offers both teams an opportunity to test their mettle early on.

In their only warm-up match before the tournament, played against Bangladesh on June 1 at the same venue, India took some interesting turns with their batting combination. Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant were promoted in the batting order, with Samson getting a shot to open alongside Rohit Sharma. Notably, Virat Kohli was rested for this warm-up game as he had just arrived in the USA on the eve of the match. Consequently, Pant found himself batting at number three. Yashasvi Jaiswal’s absence from the batting lineup during that game already gave the hint of the current playing XI selections.

The confirmed Playing XI for both teams have now set the stage for what promises to be an electric tournament opener. For India, the lineup is: Rohit Sharma (c), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (w), Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Mohammed Siraj. Ireland fields: Paul Stirling (c), Andrew Balbirnie, Lorcan Tucker (w), Harry Tector, Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, Mark Adair, Barry McCarthy, Joshua Little, and Benjamin White.

As the captains lead their men onto the field, the atmosphere in New York brims with excitement, anticipation, and the hope of witnessing a thrilling contest that will set the ball rolling for the T20 World Cup 2024.
