In a significant policy shift aimed at addressing the surging immigration crisis, President Joe Biden instituted a sweeping asylum ban on migrants caught illegally crossing the US-Mexico border on Tuesday. This landmark move comes as the nation gears up for the critical November elections, which will determine the future leadership of the White House.
Effective just after midnight, the new regulation mandates that migrants apprehended entering the United States illegally could face immediate deportation or be sent back to Mexico. Notably, the ban includes several exceptions, allowing for the protection of unaccompanied children, individuals with severe medical or safety concerns, and victims of human trafficking, according to a statement from the US Department of Homeland Security.
President Biden, a member of the Democratic Party, has adopted a more stringent approach to border security in light of immigration emerging as a paramount issue for American voters. This policy shift comes as he prepares to face Republican challenger Donald Trump in the upcoming November 5 elections. Trump, whose administration was characterized by a hardline stance on immigration, has pledged to implement extensive crackdowns if he is reelected.

“The question is where are all those people going to go?” Lucero pondered. “Many will end up on the streets or prey to traffickers.”
