Nitanshi Goel has taken the entertainment world by storm with her portrayal of Phool in Kiran Rao’s much-anticipated film ‘Laapataa Ladies.’ The young actress has impressed audiences and critics alike with her innocence and sincerity on screen. Recently, in an exclusive conversation with midday.com, Nitanshi opened up about her journey into this significant role, the dynamics she shares with her co-star Chhaya Kadam, and the profound emotional moments they experienced during filming.
Nitanshi began the conversation with a delightful recount of how she secured her role in the Aamir Khan production. With palpable excitement, she shared, “It’s actually a very fun story. The day I auditioned, I got the role. I was continuously auditioning, and then this one script really caught my eye. So I prepped overnight, and the next morning, I took a day off from school. The first thing I did was send my self-test to them. By the afternoon, I got a message that Kiran ma’am loved my audition and that Aamir sir wanted to meet me for lunch.”
The actress revealed that her elation knew no bounds when she got the acceptance call on her way back home after the final audition. “After giving my audition in front of them, on my way home, I got a call that I was on board, and I was like, ‘Yay! Let’s go!’ I was so happy; it was such an emotional moment, and I cried happy tears,” she confessed.
Nitanshi’s journey from the small town of Noida to the bustling city of Mumbai seems nothing short of a tale of perseverance and passion. Initially, the plan was to return to Noida after completing her television show stint. However, the actress found herself enthralled by the opportunities Mumbai offered. “When I came from Noida to Mumbai, I remember I came here for just one show. But after that one show, my interest increased. I wanted to do this. So, from being a fun activity, it became something I got very serious about,” Goel explained.

When asked about her choice to debut in a film like ‘Laapataa Ladies’ instead of opting for a traditional mass entertainer, Nitanshi emphasized that it was the beauty and depth of the character Phool that attracted her. She said, “I think this has to be my best debut. I don’t want anything better than this because very few stories are made, very few characters are created, which are so beautiful.”
A significant portion of the conversation revolved around her remarkable bond with her co-star Chhaya Kadam, a relationship that flourished both on and off the screen. Nitanshi affectionately nicknamed Chhaya “Manju Mai,” nurturing a genuine “dadi-beti” (grandmother-granddaughter) bond. She shared insights into their shared moments and the emotional depth they brought to their characters.
One of the most poignant anecdotes Nitanshi recounted was about a scene where their characters part ways. “When my character was finally leaving for Surajmukhi, and we’re saying goodbye to each other, these two beautiful characters are parting ways. When we shot that scene, none of us used glycerine because we were already feeling so emotional. So when we hugged, we started crying in the scene itself,” Nitanshi shared.
These genuine tears speak volumes about the intensity and authenticity the two actresses brought to their roles. Their emotional investment gave life to the screen and allowed the audience to feel their characters’ bond deeply.
Nitanshi’s narrative also sheds light on the behind-the-scenes dynamics that often contribute to the magic of cinema. Her ability to connect deeply with her co-actors and the authenticity with which she approaches her roles are perhaps why her portrayal of Phool has resonated so widely with audiences.
This heartfelt dialogue with Nitanshi Goel underscores that while the glamour of the entertainment industry is often highlighted, it is the raw, real connections and emotions behind the scenes that bring a film to life. Her journey from an audition in her school uniform to a celebrated debut is a testament to hard work, passion, and a bit of serendipity.
