Pakistan’s Bumpy Road to Super 8: Can India Pave the Way?

Team India left Pakistan gasping for breath in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 after the Men in Green suffered their second loss in the competition in as many games. With an already precarious start to their campaign, Pakistan now stares at an early elimination from the tournament, having lost to the co-hosts USA first, and now to their arch-rivals India. India and the USA, with two wins each in their first two games respectively, have emerged as the prime favourites to make it to the Super 8 from Group A. For Pakistan, the road ahead is fraught with challenges, and a series of fortunate events must align if they have any hope of advancing—bringing to mind their miraculous comeback in 2022.

Firstly, Pakistan needs to chalk up victories in both of their remaining matches against Canada and Ireland. Winning alone, however, will not suffice. Given that they have already endured two losses, they will need to ensure these victories are comprehensive to improve their net run rate substantially. Currently, Team USA’s net run rate stands at +0.626, while Pakistan’s languishes at -0.150. To overturn this deficit, Pakistan’s wins must be as large as possible.

Simultaneously, Pakistan will need help from their cricketing counterparts, especially India. As fate would have it, India faces the USA next. Pakistan’s tenuous hope rests on India continuing their winning streak to hand the USA their first loss. If India manages to defeat the USA, a chink will appear in the American armour, bringing them down a notch in the Group A rankings. However, even that won’t be enough. Pakistan will require Ireland to hand the USA their second defeat, which will then bring net run rate into sharper focus.

Only under the alignment of these outcomes will Pakistan have a viable path to the Super 8 stage. If the USA wins even one of their remaining two games, Pakistan’s hopes will be effectively extinguished. Big wins for Pakistan in their last two encounters, combined with hefty losses for the USA, will be the only viable path for Captain Babar Azam and his squad to make it to the next round.

Despite their bleak outlook, there was a moment of hope during Pakistan’s match against India. After a lacklustre bowling performance against the USA, Pakistan’s bowlers redeemed themselves by bowling out India for just 119 runs. The wicket looked much better than in the previous games in New York, making India’s score seem chaseable. However, some outstanding bowling from the Indian pacers, led by the ever-impressive Jasprit Bumrah, coupled with a cautious approach from the Pakistan batters, snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. This sequence of events left Pakistan hanging by a slender thread in the competition.

As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on India and USA’s performances. Will India continue their dominant form and aid Pakistan in the process, or will the stars refuse to align for the Men in Green? For Pakistan, it will be essential to not only win but do so emphatically. Their batters and bowlers alike will need to bring their A-game against Canada and Ireland, ensuring they close their matches with substantial margins to claw back some ground on the net run rate.

Team USA, on the other hand, will be riding high on the momentum of their opening victories and will look to seal their spot in the Super 8 stage as quickly as possible. They have so far shown resilience and adeptness in navigating the challenges thrown their way. Ireland’s game against the USA could turn out to be a pivotal contest, with potential implications not just for the two teams involved, but for Pakistan and the broader dynamics of Group A as well.

In the unrelenting world of international cricket, each run, each wicket, and each decision holds immense weight. Pakistan finds itself in a pressure cooker scenario where any slip could spell the end of their T20 World Cup journey. The team will need to summon both skill and spirit, drawing upon past miracles as inspiration, to weather this storm. Amidst the fervour of international cricket, the fans, the analysts, and even the players will be living each moment, knowing full well that the line between advancing and exiting is razor-thin.

In conclusion, the narrative of this World Cup is yet to fully unfold, but for Pakistan, the immediate focus remains crystal clear: win big, hope for favourable outcomes, and keep the dream alive against all odds.
