NZ vs BAN T20Is: Returning captain Kane Williamson withdrawn Rachin Ravindra comes in as replacement

New Zealand cricket fans will have to wait longer to see their celebrated captain Kane Williamson back in the shortest format of the game as New Zealand Cricket (NZC) announced the withdrawal of Williamson from the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh. Initially scheduled to lead the team in the three-match series set to kick off on December 27, Williamson has been pulled out to ensure his readiness for high-profile Test series against South Africa and Australia later this summer.

Williamson, a stalwart in the New Zealand line-up, has not been seen in T20 international action since facing India in November 2022. An extended absence from the game due to a knee injury kept him sidelined for seven months in 2023, with his reemergence on the competitive stage occurring during the World Cup 2023, where he displayed commendable form.

Adding to his achievements, the 33-year-old scored an impressive century in the Sylhet Test against Bangladesh just last month. To manage his workload, NZC also granted him a rest during the current ODI series at home. Alongside Williamson, pace bowler Kyle Jamieson is also set to miss the T20I series against Pakistan scheduled for next month, with eyes set on preparation for the summer Test cricket.

In a recent statement, New Zealand Cricket outlined the reasons for Williamson’s removal: “Kane will undergo a period of knee rehabilitation and strengthening following his recent return to play in India and Bangladesh.” The statement addressed Kyle Jamieson as well, citing “…Kyle’s hamstring injury was best served by a period of targeted rehabilitation leading into February’s Test Series against South Africa.”

Coach Gary Stead conveyed that the decision stemmed from a joint consultation involving the medical team and the two key players. He emphasized the importance of having both Williamson and Jamieson at peak form for the upcoming Test challenges, stressing that after thorough discussions, a dedicated period of rehabilitation and conditioning emerged as the wisest path for their fitness.

As New Zealand adjusts to this development, rising all-rounder Rachin Ravindra and pacer Jacob Duffy have been chosen to step in as replacements for Williamson and Jamieson. Meanwhile, established spinner Mitchell Santner will don the captain’s mantle for the T20I confrontation with Bangladesh.

Here’s how the reshuffled New Zealand T20I squad shapes up for the clash with Bangladesh: Mitchell Santner (c), Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Adam Milne, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Glenn Phillips (wk), Ben Sears, Tim Seifert (wk), Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Jacob Duffy, Rachin Ravindra.

With international cricket continually providing unexpected twists and turns, this latest news adds another layer of complexity to the Black Caps’ summer season. The focus now shifts to the remaining squad members who aim to uphold the team’s competitive edge in the absence of their leading men. As New Zealand’s cricket enthusiasts prepare for the forthcoming series, anticipation builds around how the team will adapt and perform under the interim leadership of Mitchell Santner.
