As celebrated actor Manoj Bajpayee hits the significant milestone of completing 100 films, he takes a reflective stroll down memory lane. Musing on his journey through a relentless and often unforgiving industry, Bajpayee admits to facing myriad challenges before achieving the status he enjoys today. The industry, as he affirms, has transformed considerably for the better.
Bajpayee, whose latest outing Bhaiyya Ji marks his 100th venture, is effervescent as he discusses his experience. “It’s a culmination of hard work, patience, and dedication,” he says. The actor’s smile is almost audible over the call, mirroring the infectious joy he brings to his character in Raj-DK’s spy thriller series The Family Man. “The third season is shaping up great. I don’t want to be flamboyant, but each day’s experience assures us that this season will be far bigger and better,” states Bajpayee, beaming with pride while reminiscing about his hit series.

But Bajpayee is savoring another high these days; his 100th movie Bhaiyya Ji recently premièred on ZEE5 after its theatrical release in May. Asked if he hoped for a better box-office outcome, Bajpayee pragmatically replies, “Let’s not even go by theatre viewing nowadays. It did remarkably well in single screens, but the footfall in multiplexes was not as high. This seems to be the trend for most films in multiplexes these days.”
Achieving the 100-film milestone is an ideal moment for introspection, and Bajpayee finds himself pondering his three-decade-long cinematic journey. He recalls filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt’s words that left an indelible mark on him. “‘You achieved all of this even after being so choosy. It’s a great achievement,’ Bhatt saab said to me. I selected my films with immense care. While some choices missed the mark, most turned out to be right. To complete 100 films in this cut-throat industry is a miracle in itself!”
The path to this milestone was not paved with ease. Bajpayee admits that sticking to his convictions in an industry obsessed with box-office numbers was incredibly challenging.
. Nevertheless, he marched to his own beat, shaping a filmography replete with critically acclaimed movies such as Satya (1998), Shool (1999), Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), and Aligarh (2015). Today, he epitomizes success for aspiring actors who seek to steer meaningful narratives.
The actor doesn’t shy away from expressing his admiration for today’s generation of actors. “Today’s actors are at an advantage. They have come at a time when things have changed remarkably. Be it me, Irrfan Khan, or Kay Kay Menon, we had it tough. We had to navigate through difficult times to find our way with filmmakers and stories,” Bajpayee says. He reflects on the struggles endured by himself and his contemporaries, stating that they took a lot of beatings before witnessing the industry’s transformation. “I envy these actors who have arrived at a time when choices are so many,” he adds wistfully.
Yet, Bajpayee’s sacrifices were not just professional. On a poignant note, he shares the painful reality of losing precious time with his family, particularly his parents, who passed away during his demanding career. “You make these sacrifices when you’re chasing a dream,” he sighs, highlighting that the cost of chasing his cinematic ambitions wasn’t merely about enduring professional hardships but also personal losses.
Still, despite the trials, Bajpayee finds himself content and reflective. He acknowledges that while every career has its pitfalls, the larger picture is most often rewarding. He mentions, “This milestone made me realize the importance of persistence and sticking to values. Despite the ups and downs, it’s been a fulfilling journey.”
As Bajpayee anticipates the third season of The Family Man with excitement, his gratitude is palpable.
