Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has taken the significant step of indefinitely suspending veteran wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella following a doping violation detected during the Lanka Premier League 2024 (LPL). The 31-year-old cricketer tested positive for a prohibited substance, leading to immediate suspension from all forms of cricket, pending further notice, according to official sources.
The decision, announced on Friday, August 16, marks a serious turning point in Dickwella’s cricketing career. The Kandy-born player, celebrated for his prowess behind the stumps and his aggressive batting style, last appeared in an international game during a Test match against New Zealand in March 2023. Although he was included in the T20I series squad against Bangladesh earlier this year, he did not get a chance to play. Niroshan Dickwella has had a notable career since making his debut for the Sri Lanka national team in July 2014. Over the years, he amassed 4,841 runs in 137 international matches, achieving two centuries and 32 fifties. However, this isn’t the first time he has faced a suspension. The SLC previously penalized him for a bio-security bubble breach during Sri Lanka’s tour of England in 2021.
