The England Cricket Board (ECB) has adopted a cautious strategy following the injury of Test captain Ben Stokes, intending to safeguard its key players ahead of crucial Test matches. In a significant move, the ECB has withdrawn another prominent pacer, Gus Atkinson, from participating in The Hundred final, following the earlier withdrawal of Chris Woakes.
Gus Atkinson, who had only featured in one match for his team, the Oval Invincibles, will miss the final showdown of the tournament. The Invincibles already secured their place in the final by topping the eight-team leaderboard, thus circumventing the need to compete in the Eliminator match. This tactical decision aims to ensure that these players are in optimal condition for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
Sam Billings, the captain of the Oval Invincibles, confirmed the development and expressed his outlook on the situation. “Gus has been withdrawn, which is quite understandable. It’s disappointing for him but Saqib Mahmood has been phenomenal for us all tournament and showed his class the other night. He’ll stay in the side,” Billings commented. The team has also been coping with the absence of pacer Spencer Johnson due to an injury. On a positive note, pacer Tom Curran, who was rested in the Invincibles’ last group game against the Trent Rockets, is set to make a return.
In the only match Atkinson played against the Rockets, he registered figures of 0/28 from his 10 deliveries. A notable highlight of Atkinson’s career is being named the Player of the Series in the England vs West Indies Test series, where he claimed 22 wickets, making a stellar impression in his debut series.
The ECB’s cautious approach surfaced recently when they decided to pull speedster Woakes out of the final week of The Hundred following Stokes’ injury. Stokes, the England Test captain who plays for the Northern Superchargers, sustained a hamstring tear during a match against the Manchester Originals on August 11. This injury triggered serious concerns regarding the welfare of key players ahead of the impending Test series.
Despite these withdrawals, several Test squad members remain available to play in The Hundred final.

Birmingham Phoenix’s Jamie Smith and Ben Duckett, along with the Invincibles’ Jordan Cox, are set to participate even though they are part of the Test squad for the series starting on August 21, just three days after The Hundred final. Billings shared his thoughts regarding Cox’s availability, highlighting the importance of match experience. “Jordan will be available and I think that’s great for him,” Billings remarked. “I’ve been in that position before where as a young player, you get withdrawn and miss out on playing time. For anyone to play in a final at Lord’s in the leading domestic competition in the country, in front of a packed house is perfect preparation for international cricket.”
Adding another interesting dimension to the final, it is anticipated that Jofra Archer will be available for Southern Brave during the knockout stages. James Vince, the skipper of Southern Brave, expressed his hopeful stance. “I’ve not heard otherwise, so I’m hoping that’s the case,” Vince stated. “Obviously we’ve got tomorrow to take care of first, but as I understand it, he is available for both should we make the final. I can’t give you 100% confirmation because I don’t know that myself, to be honest. But there’s not much travel involved and it’s only 20 balls [per match] so I’m sure he’ll be fine,” he added.
The stage for the final is set as the Oval Invincibles await the winner of the Eliminator between Birmingham Phoenix and Southern Brave. The Eliminator is scheduled for Saturday, August 17, while the final will take place the following day.
