Imtiaz Ali’s Financial Success Owes Much to Shahid Kapoor’s Unconventional Guidance

Shahid Kapoor and Imtiaz Ali first came together in 2007 to create cinematic magic with the cult classic ‘Jab We Met.’ Over the years, the film has reached legendary status, sparking constant rumors about a potential sequel. However, beyond their on-screen success, what many don’t realize is the crucial role Shahid Kapoor played in transforming Imtiaz Ali into a financially prosperous individual.

Imtiaz Ali is often celebrated as an artistic genius, crafting stories that resonate with audiences on a profound level. However, in a recent episode of Mid-day’s ‘Sit With Hitlist’ series, Ali candidly revealed an intriguing facet of his journey—how Shahid Kapoor became his self-appointed financial advisor. “Shahid has guided me quite a lot. He also told me, ‘Yaar dekhi na, abhi hamari picture thodi chal gayi hai. So, abhi jo doosri picture iske baad jab aap banayenge na sir, don’t fix price right now. Because I feel this film is climbing,” Ali recounted. He further elaborated how Shahid advised him on negotiating deals for his subsequent projects, cautioning him against setting a fixed price prematurely, owing to the rising success of ‘Jab We Met.’

Ali and Kapoor’s collaboration came about in an unplanned yet serendipitous manner. The filmmaker initially intended to cast Kapoor in a different project. However, it was destiny that steered them towards ‘Jab We Met,’ a narrative that would forever alter their careers. The story revolves around Aditya Kashyap (played by Shahid Kapoor), a disheartened tycoon who boards a train in a state of aimlessness after attending his ex-girlfriend’s wedding. During this journey, he encounters Geet Dhillon (portrayed by Kareena Kapoor), a vivacious young woman determined to elope with her lover. Aditya gets swept into Geet’s exhilarating life, and through their adventures, he discovers a renewed approach to life, eventually falling for her.

The characters of Aditya and Geet are iconic, embodying the adage ‘Opposites attract.’ Their dynamic chemistry played a pivotal role in the film’s success, along with its compelling soundtrack. Tracks like “Ye Ishq Hai,” “Mauja Hi Mauja,” “Tum Se Hi,” and “Aaoge Jab Tum” continue to enchant listeners, further cementing the film’s legacy.

As ‘Jab We Met’ continued to garner acclaim, Shahid’s financial acumen proved to be invaluable for Imtiaz Ali.

. “I said, ‘I can ask for X number of lakhs.’ He says, ‘Haan, maybe you’ll get twice that. And who knows, maybe you’ll get Rs 1 crore also’. Don’t fix it without calling me. Because he thought log isko bewakoof bana denge,” Ali quoted Shahid.

After the immense success of ‘Jab We Met,’ Imtiaz Ali moved on to his next venture, ‘Love Aaj Kal,’ featuring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone. Despite being swamped with the creative demands of his new project, Ali followed Shahid’s advice regarding financial negotiations. This decision, however, tested the patience of his producers, especially Dinesh Vijan. “I waited, and Dinu suffered. You ask him. He’ll never forget this. He’s like, ‘Sir, the number you said, my head hit the roof’. I said, ‘Blame Shahid Kapoor for this’,” Ali shared with a chuckle.

The tale of how Shahid Kapoor indirectly shaped Imtiaz Ali’s financial journey offers an unusual yet captivating backstory to their professional partnership. While their artistic collaboration birthed a film that continues to be adored by fans globally, Kapoor’s role as Ali’s financial guardian angel remains an endearing, lesser-known chapter of their relationship.

‘Jab We Met’ stands as a testament to what can happen when talent, timing, and teamwork align perfectly. Its persistent popularity and the whispers about a sequel are proof of its enduring impact. However, beyond this cinematic masterpiece lies a story of friendship, trust, and unexpected mentorship that significantly influenced Ali’s career.

As fans eagerly anticipate any news about a potential sequel, this fascinating anecdote adds a deeper layer to their admiration for the duo. It underscores the reality that in the world of cinema, success often has unseen facets, blending personal advice with professional triumphs to create stories that resonate both on and off the screen.
