This exciting announcement was made public by Rao herself on her Instagram account, igniting excitement among fans and film enthusiasts alike. The film is scheduled to hit Japanese theaters on October 4, 2024.
Kiran Rao shared a captivating clip from the movie on her Instagram, with the caption, “Laapataa Ladies will be found in Japan from October 4, 2024. We are so excited for our theatrical release in Japan by Shochiku, Japan – arigato gozaimasu.” The filmmaker’s enthusiasm for this international venture is palpable, highlighting the film’s journey from Indian screens to a global audience.
Set against the backdrop of rural India, “Laapataa Ladies” narrates the intriguing story of two brides who find themselves separated during a train journey, leading to a series of unexpected and complex events. The film’s unique storyline and cultural richness have resonated deeply with audiences, making it a standout piece in contemporary Indian cinema. The film’s emphasis on gender equality further adds a layer of significance, making its international release especially relevant.
Recently, the film was given the prestigious honor of being screened at the Supreme Court of India. The event was graced by the presence of both Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan, who have been instrumental in bringing this project to life. During this screening, Aamir Khan spoke about his inspiration for producing the film, sharing insights into his commitment to the film industry and society.
In a heartfelt interaction with Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Aamir Khan revealed, “During Covid, I had a lot of free time and used to keep thinking. I realised that I might have 15 more years of active work left…uske baad zindagi kisne dekhi hai….
. I wanted to give back to people whatever I have learned in the past so many years. The industry, society, and country have given me so much. I thought that I could do one film a year as an actor, but as a producer, I can produce many more films. I want to give platform to new talents. I can provide a platform for new writers, directors, and everyone involved in the process.”
Aamir Khan’s commitment to nurturing new talent is evident in “Laapataa Ladies,” which he regards as the first of many projects aimed at promoting fresh voices in the industry. Expressing his vision, he added, “‘Laapataa Ladies’ is the first project in that sense. I want to promote this kind of talent and hopefully, I can produce four to five films a year. I want to be the shoulder for talent.”
The film’s journey began with a triumphant premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2023, where it received a standing ovation. This international recognition has further solidified its reputation, paving the way for its release in Japan. The film’s cast, including Ravi Kishan, Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ratna, and Sparsh Shrivastav, has been celebrated for their compelling performances, bringing the heartfelt story to life.
The announcement of the Japanese release has been met with enthusiasm not just from fans, but also from the Japanese distributor Shochiku, one of the oldest and most respected film companies in Japan. Their involvement signifies a major step for Indian cinema in penetrating the Japanese market, which has traditionally been selective about foreign films.
The widespread appeal of “Laapataa Ladies” lies in its universal themes of love, separation, and resilience, combined with a culturally rich narrative. Its representation of rural India provides international audiences with a glimpse into the rich tapestry of Indian society, making it a cultural bridge between India and Japan.
As the release date approaches, anticipation continues to build. The film’s success in India and at TIFF suggests that it is well poised to captivate Japanese audiences as well. With Kiran Rao’s vision and Aamir Khan’s support, “Laapataa Ladies” is set to embark on a new chapter in its journey, highlighting the power of cinema in uniting diverse cultures and storytelling traditions.
