‘We will not remember…’: KL Rahul opens up on India’s ICC trophy drought and bilateral series wins

Indian cricket’s search for an elusive ICC trophy was met with disappointment yet again as the dream of clinching the World Cup at home was shattered by a stellar Australian side on November 19. Riding high on a wave of 10 consecutive wins, the men in blue appeared indomitable at one stretch of the tournament. However, the Aussies displayed exemplary strategic acumen in the final, clinching their sixth World Cup triumph and extending India’s wait for an ICC trophy.

In the aftermath of this heart-rendering loss, Indian Test wicketkeeper KL Rahul spoke candidly about the team’s longing for victory and the significance of triumphing in ICC tournaments. Conversing with Star Sports, Rahul voiced an insight that resonates with many of his peers: bilateral series successes could never overshadow the prestige of winning a World Cup. He emphasized, “It really doesn’t mean much or 10 years or 15 years later when we retire we will not remember our career for the runs or wickets that we’ve taken or other bilateral series that we won. World Cups are the only thing that we will remember. So, yeah, there’s that extra fire in us to go a couple of steps further the next time.” The team’s sights are now firmly set on the T20 World Cup slated for June 2024, to be hosted by the West Indies and the USA.

Rahul’s journey to the World Cup was fraught with challenges, particularly a thigh injury incurred during the Indian Premier League (IPL). His return within the recovery timeframe appeared improbable, as reflected in his surgeon’s prognosis. “I don’t think it’s possible to make it in time for the World Cup. That’s what the surgeon told us as well. He said it’ll take five months from the time of surgery. Surgery happened in May, so that meant I’d come back just in time for the World Cup, but also, I know how things work, right? You can’t just come straight back into the World Cup. The team wants you to play a few more games before that, just so that they get confidence so that you get confidence”, Rahul elucidated. Yet, triumphing over adversity, Rahul made a timely recovery and played an integral part in India’s impressive streak of 10 wins.

Back in the present, KL Rahul is actively participating in the ongoing Test series with South Africa and is expected to take the field for the New Year Test in Cape Town, starting January 3. His contributions remain crucial as India navigates through its rigorous international schedule, seeking to balance the desire for ICC titles with the demands of various formats.

Unrelated to World Cup matters but pertinent to the current cricket milieu are several stories weaving through the fabric of the sport. Harmanpreet Kaur and Viswanathan Anand have recently shared insights into their fitness regimes on Prime Minister Modi’s Mann Ki Baat, demonstrating the interdisciplinary nature of sports fitness. Meanwhile, questions abound regarding Shardul Thakur’s participation in the second Test after suffering a blow during the nets; an update on this front is eagerly anticipated by fans and analysts alike. And in a more disconcerting revelation, umpires were forcefully removed and arrested in a T20 league following allegations of non-payment by a team owner, highlighting the occasional turmoil beneath the game’s surface.

As the cricketing community looks ahead to future challenges and conquests, the Indian team, encapsulated by the resolve of players like KL Rahul, remains steadfast in its pursuit of that coveted ICC supremacy. While bilateral series and individual achievements contribute to the tapestry of their careers, it is the pursuit of World Cup glory that continues to ignite their collective ambition.
