The art and cultural tapestry of Bengaluru is set to be adorned with vibrant colors and creative expressions as the city gears up for the 21st edition of its renowned annual art fair, Chitra Santhe, scheduled for January 7. This year’s theme pays homage to the remarkable accomplishments of Indian scientists in the arena of space research and exploration, reflecting the nation’s pride in its scientific community.
Positioned in the heart of Karnataka’s bustling capital, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath (KCP), the esteemed institution behind Chitra Santhe, has meticulously organized this grand event which will see over 1,500 artists coming together from 22 different states across India. The Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, is expected to inaugurate the festival that stands as a testament to India’s diverse and rich artistic heritage.
Chitra Santhe’s 21st iteration has garnered immense interest from the artist community, evidenced by the overwhelming 2,726 applications received by the organizers. This eclectic mix comprises professional artists, hobbyists, traditional painters, students, art institutions, and remarkably, a notable participation from both specially-abled artists, accounting for 7.6% and senior citizen artists, representing 6% of the total submissions. B.L. Shankar, the president of KCP, has proudly asserted that no application from these artists has been turned away.
In response to the unprecedented volume of participants, the fair arrangements have expanded beyond the KCP campus on Kumara Krupa Road and Crescent Road. An additional 300 stalls are planned for distribution across the Seva Dal ground and along the service roads under the Shivananda Circle steel flyover, stretching from Shivananda Circle to Gururaja Kalyana Mantapa. This strategic allocation ensures dedicated spaces for specially-abled artists and senior citizens, with approximately 150 artists accommodated in each of the augmented venues.
About half a million visitors are anticipated to grace the event, and in a bid to streamline their experience, especially in regards to the often-criticized parking situation, new transport measures are being implemented. The BMTC metro feeder buses will be facilitating smooth transit from several key metro stations such as B. R. Ambedkar, Vidhana Soudha, Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, Majestic, and Mantri Square Sampige Road, directly to the art fair’s doorstep.
Addressing the need for accessible mobility, the event has partnered with the app Namma Yatri to bring forth an innovative solution—30 women-driven autorickshaws focused on offering last-mile connectivity for both artists and patrons alike.
The Chitra Santhe isn’t merely a marketplace but a canvas that brings to life Mysuru and Tanjore traditional paintings, Rajasthani and Madhubani artworks, and a plethora of traditional, modern, and contemporary artforms. Whether you’re an art aficionado, a curious onlooker, or someone seeking a slice of culture, Chitra Santhe is an extraordinary symphony of artistic endeavors that captivates the soul of every visitor.
With such a rich confluence of artistic brilliance, the Chitra Santhe is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of India’s cultural dynamism and the unyielding spirit of its artists. On January 7, Bengaluru’s horizon will be illuminated by the creative sparks of thousands of artists, making the Chitra Santhe a landmark event on the cultural calendar.
