ICC awards 2023: Suryakumar Yadav and Yashasvi Jaiswal among first set of nominees announced

A pulse of excitement coursed through the cricketing world on Wednesday, January 3, as the International Cricket Council (ICC) unveiled a stellar lineup of nominees for several of its prestigious annual awards. The cricketing fraternity has turned its keen gaze toward a bevy of talented players who have made their mark in the T20I arena, with eyes also set on the emerging stars who are shaping the future of the sport.

Suryakumar Yadav, a name that now resonates with remarkable skill and consistency in the shortest format, once again finds himself in the running for the Men’s T20I Cricketer of the Year award. Having clinched the title in the previous year, his nomination comes as no surprise given that he secured the third spot in the highest run-getter list of 2023. Yadav is joined by Mark Chapman of New Zealand, whose splendid performance has seen him become the sixth highest run-scorer of the year; Alpesh Ramjani from Uganda, who finished 2023 as the leading wicket-taker; and Zimbabwe’s spirited all-rounder Sikandar Raza.

On the women’s front, the nominations for the T20I Cricketer of the Year bring forth a rich blend of experience and talent. Chamari Athapaththu of Sri Lanka has been instrumental in her team’s wins, especially away from home, and is acknowledged for her memorable knocks that made her stand out. She is nominated alongside the prodigious Sophie Ecclestone from England, the versatile Hayley Matthews from the West Indies, and Australia’s seasoned campaigner Ellyse Perry.

The ICC also casts a spotlight on the budding talent that has surfaced in the international circuit. The Emerging Cricketer of the Year category is especially significant as it honors those who represent the potential future superstars of cricket. In the men’s category, India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal is a notable mention. His impressive debut last year in Test and T20I cricket bore fruit with a century in each format. Jaiswal’s competition includes Gerald Coetzee from South Africa, Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka, and Rachin Ravindra of New Zealand, all of whom left indelible marks during the ODI World Cup held in India.

The women’s segment for the same category features a quartet of remarkable talents from around the cricketing world. Bangladesh’s Marufa Akter has made waves, while England’s fast bowler Lauren Bell has turned heads with her pace and precision. They are nominated alongside Scotland’s Darcey Carter and Phoebe Litchfield of Australia, both of whom have displayed immense potential and skill in their young careers.

The winners of these coveted accolades will be decided through a combined selection process involving the ICC Voting Academy and cricket fans worldwide, showcasing a blend of expert opinion and public sentiment. This process underscores the democratic spirit of the sport, extending the decision-making beyond the realms of cricket’s governing bodies to its passionate followers.

Moreover, the anticipation is set to grow as the ICC promises to reveal nominees for nine additional categories by January 5, including the much-celebrated Test and ODI Cricketer of the Year, as well as the supreme honor of the Cricketer of the Year for both men’s and women’s cricket. It is noteworthy that Women’s cricket does not feature a separate award for the Test format due to the limited number of matches played. However, that does nothing to diminish the achievements of the women who have excelled in the formats celebrated.

The stage is thus set for an exciting finish to this anticipation-filled period, with the ICC slated to announce the winners later in the month. The cricket community eagerly awaits these announcements, ready to applaud the players who have not only showcased their talent but have also contributed to the vibrant tapestry of international cricket in the past year.
