In a strategic move, the prominent cricket franchise Mumbai Indians (MI) has made key announcements pertaining to the leadership of their teams in two major T20 tournaments across the globe. The widely recognized MI legend, Kieron Pollard, will now take on the captaincy mantle for MI Cape Town in the South African SA20 league. This decision came as a consequence of star Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan being unable to participate in the 2024 edition of the SA20 league due to an ongoing injury.
In a press release, MI Cape Town expressed their regret over Rashid Khan’s unavailability, stating, “MI CT wish Rashid a quick recovery and look to have him back on the playing field soon.” Rashid Khan, who held the team’s reins in the previous year, has been sidelined from competitive cricket since the World Cup in 2023 and could not partake in the Big Bash League either. Despite being named in Afghanistan’s squad for the upcoming T20I series against India, it is improbable for Rashid to take the field given his recovery process.
Addressing the consequent leadership transition, the franchise has vested Kieron Pollard with the responsibility of steering MI Cape Town. Pollard’s leadership experience spans various T20 leagues around the world, and last year he captained the MI Emirates in the ILT20. However, due to his SA20 commitments, his presence in the upcoming ILT20 is predicted to be limited. This, in turn, makes way for Pooran, known for his dynamic presence and strategic mindset, to take up the leadership role and guide the team.
