Georgia Wareham Ellyse Perry guide all-round Australia to series-levelling win against India in 2nd T20I

The Australian women’s cricket team exhibited a dominant performance in the second T20I match to draw level in the three-match series against India. The match, held at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, showcased Australia’s strong all-round game. Opting to field first, the Australian bowlers restricted the Indian team to a modest 130 runs. In their chase, they managed to reach the target with an over to spare, setting up a thrilling decider for the series with the scoreline now 1-1.

India’s innings were a story of missed opportunities, as none of the batters managed to capitalize on their starts. Top-order bats like Smriti Mandhana, and Richa Ghosh, along with Jemimah Rodrigues, got going but failed to convert these into significant scores. Deepti Sharma top-scored with a restrained 30 runs, amidst falling wickets which made it hard for her to accelerate the scoring rate.

The Australian bowling unit functioned effectively as a cohesive whole but it was Georgia Wareham who caught the eye with an economical spell of 2 wickets for just 17 runs. Annabel Sutherland and Kim Garth also made notable contributions by each taking two wickets, potentially setting the tone for a relatively straightforward chase.

As the Australian openers Alyssa Healy and Beth Mooney walked out to bat, there was an air of inevitability about the chase. They carefully negotiated the powerplay until Deepti Sharma offered India a glimmer of hope by dismissing both openers in quick succession. Against an Australian lineup known for its depth, India needed to keep the pressure up with regular breakthroughs.

Despite the early successes, the relatively modest total was not enough ammunition for India to keep the batting side under constant threat. The Australian middle order, much like their Indian counterparts, made useful starts but couldn’t persist at the crease. However, they didn’t need to – the target was not daunting enough to cause any palpitations in the pavilion.

When Ellyse Perry strode to the crease, there was a sense of calm amid the chaos. Known for her composure and match-winning abilities, Perry played a calculated unbeaten innings of 32 runs. She was well-supported by Phoebe Litchfield, who remained not out on 18, steering Australia to a victory that spoke volumes of their balanced and resilient squad.

The Indian team, which had started the series decisively, now faces the challenge of regrouping before the decisive final match. While the comeback of stars like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to T20Is and the return of Sanju Samson to India’s T20 side for the series against Afghanistan have been significant talking points off the field, India’s women will be keen to reclaim their momentum on it. They will certainly look for a more substantial batting performance, hoping for repeat heroics akin to what Shafali Verma showed in the opening fixture.

As the series progresses to its climax in the upcoming final game, both teams find themselves in a pressure cooker situation with everything to play for. The Australian women have shown their class and resilience, while the Indian women have displayed flashes of brilliance that they will now need to sustain. With the series tantalizingly poised at one apiece, the decider promises to be a spectacular showdown in women’s cricket.
