IND vs AFG: Litmus test for India’s young blood in final T20I dress rehearsal as World Cup stands in sight

For the past 14 months, India’s cricketing landscape has witnessed a notable absence of its usual giants. The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, and Jasprit Bumrah have been missing from the T20 squad, which has provided a fertile ground for fresh talent to emerge and prove their mettle. With an ODI-focused year placing less emphasis on T20 cricket, the shorter format has seen Hardik Pandya stepping up as the unofficial torchbearer, while a new generation, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, and Mukesh Kumar, have taken their first steps, increasing the debutant count to 11 since the 2022 World Cup in Australia. Amidst this backdrop of transformation, the upcoming series against Afghanistan looms as a crucial test for these emerging prodigies.

The three-match T20I series against Afghanistan serves not only as the ultimate prelude to the highly-anticipated T20 World Cup 2024 but also as a litmus test for India’s youthful brigade. With the Indian Premier League (IPL) around the corner, the series gains even more significance as the BCCI is set to closely monitor 30 hopefuls during this domestic cricket extravaganza. Nevertheless, the World Cup squad will be finalized a month before the tournament kicks off, with only half the IPL season gone by – underscoring the importance of the upcoming international fixtures for India’s World Cup quest.

Indeed, the return of veterans such as Kohli and Rohit marks a turning point where aspiring youngsters are expected to rise to the occasion, and none more so than Rinku Singh and Yashasvi Jaiswal, whose recent performances have garnered commendable acclaim. Rinku, known for his game-finishing prowess, and Jaiswal, who excels as an opening bastion, now find themselves amidst intense competition as seasoned and preferred players make their comeback from injury and rest.

Rinku’s rise from his IPL exploits in 2023, where he spectacularly hit five sixes against the Gujarat Titans, to his international debut in Ireland is a testament to his burgeoning reputation. In 12 T20Is, he has demonstrated his calibre with the bat. Yet, despite his accomplishments, there remains a question over his automatic selection for the World Cup XI.

The puzzle of the Indian Playing XI is indeed a conundrum, especially when considering the cases of Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan against the backdrop of Jaiswal’s smooth ascent. While Gill and Kishan have had modest tallies of 312 and 143 runs respectively, Jaiswal has amassed 430 runs at an average of 33.07 as an opener, positioning him strongly for a role at the World Cup. Rinku, who boasts an average of 65.50 and a strike rate of 180.68, finds the predicament more nuanced. If the Men in Blue opt for a lineup that includes Rohit, Jaiswal/Gill, Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and a wicket-keeper, it leaves a solitary berth at number 7 which could accommodate Rinku; however, that would also necessitate a four-bowler strategy with Hardik as the fifth, a tactical gamble that could risk team balance.

As for the bowling department, Bumrah and Siraj have etched themselves as India’s go-to options across formats. Their reliability makes them hard to sidestep. Notwithstanding, with their temporary absence for the Afghanistan series, other bowlers have the platform to assert their value. Mukesh Kumar has shown prowess at the death, as has Arshdeep Singh, the latter claiming the mantle of 2023’s leading death-overs wicket-taker in T20Is with 13 dismissals. Yet the eventual return of key bowlers like Bumrah threatens to upend the dynamics of the bowling roster.

Despite lacking the usual media spotlight and the presence of big names, the Afghan series should not be underestimated in its significance. As one of the final opportunities before the IPL, these matches are a gateway for the nation’s promising talent to stake their claim in a full-strength Indian side, with the dream of bringing World Cup glory back home.
