Coldplay’s Exciting Return to India: Reliving Their 2016 Mumbai Soirée with Bollywood Stars

Coldplay, the globally adored British band led by Chris Martin, is all set to return to India for a much-anticipated concert in January 2025. The band’s last performance on Indian soil was in 2016, and it was nothing short of a spectacle. Ahead of their upcoming tour, fans have been reminiscing about the band’s memorable time in Mumbai during their previous visit. In 2016, besides delivering a stellar performance, Coldplay’s members were treated to an extravagant party hosted by none other than Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan.

During their Mumbai sojourn in 2016, Coldplay was hosted at Mannat, Shah Rukh Khan’s stunning residence. The event was a star-studded affair with a who’s who of the Bollywood industry in attendance. A-listers such as Shraddha Kapoor and her brother Siddhanth, Imtiaz Ali, Riteish Deshmukh and his wife Genelia, and Sonakshi Sinha were seen enjoying the evening.

Adding to the evening’s glitz were surprise appearances by Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Shriya Saran, Dia Mirza, and Vivek Oberoi. The night was a blend of iconic Bollywood and international music personalities indulging in a rare cultural exchange. Ranveer Singh, who was reportedly dating Deepika Padukone at the time, was also there, sticking by her side throughout the bash.

An old picture from the party featuring Chris Martin in a cozy moment with Deepika Padukone has recently gone viral, rekindling fans’ memories of that extraordinary evening. The image shows the Coldplay frontman comfortably mingling with the Bollywood actress, further illustrating the delightful crossover between the music and film industries that night.

Coldplay’s camaraderie with Bollywood’s elite didn’t stop at the party. Chris Martin, in particular, has openly expressed his admiration for Shah Rukh Khan, Bollywood’s ‘Baadshah’. In 2019, Chris took to Twitter to share his playlist, which included an eclectic mix of tracks such as “Tal Uno” by Barrie, “Dwa Serduszka” by Mazowsze, “A New Beginning” by John Williams from the Minority Report, and “Batard” by Stromae. He signed off his tweet with a fond note, “Shah Rukh Khan forever.

Shah Rukh Khan, being the gracious host that he is, was quick to respond to Chris’s praise. He promised to listen to the music recommendations and even offered to send some Indian music in return. Their interaction highlighted a mutual respect and admiration that transcended geographical and cultural boundaries.

Fast forward to the present, Coldplay has announced their return to India with their ‘Music of the Spheres World Tour’. The band’s Mumbai shows are scheduled for January 18 and 19, 2025, at the DY Patil Sports Stadium. The overwhelming response from fans led to the addition of a third show on January 21, ensuring more fans could partake in the experience.

To make the concert more accessible to fans, Coldplay will offer a limited number of ‘Infinity Tickets’. These will be priced at the equivalent of Euro 20 (approximately Rs 2000) per ticket. The tickets, which will go on sale on November 22, 2024, must be bought in pairs, allowing friends and couples to enjoy the concert together.

The setlist for the tour promises to be a blend of old and new. In addition to songs from their Album of the Year-nominated ‘Music Of The Spheres’ and new singles ‘We Pray’ and ‘feelslikeimfallinginlove’ from their upcoming release ‘Moon Music’, the band will also entertain fans with popular hits like ‘Yellow’, ‘The Scientist’, ‘Clocks’, ‘Fix You’, ‘Viva La Vida’, ‘Paradise’, ‘A Sky Full Of Stars’, and ‘Adventure Of A Lifetime’.

Coldplay’s history with India began with their performance at the Global Citizen Festival in Mumbai in 2016. The band, which was formed in 1997, comprises vocalist and pianist Chris Martin, guitarist Jonny Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer Will Champion. Their previous visit left an indelible mark not only due to their musical performance but also because of their engagement with Bollywood’s finest.

As the anticipation builds for Coldplay’s January concerts, fans are not just eager to witness an electrifying performance but also look forward to the cultural amalgamation that this musical reunion promises. The countdown to January has begun, and Coldplay’s return to India is poised to be another chapter in their illustrious journey, weaving together the fabric of music and film once again.
