Mumbai, India – Bollywood actress and filmmaker Kangana Ranaut has agreed to comply with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC)’s demands for modifications to her much-anticipated film, “Emergency.” This development was disclosed to the Bombay High Court on Monday by CBFC representatives, marking a significant step forward for the film that has faced numerous delays and revisions.
In a series of statements, advocate Sharan Jagtiani, who represents Zee, informed the court that Kangana had accepted the censor board’s requirements. However, she has also urged the court to ensure that no further demands for edits would be made. “The cuts suggested don’t even touch a minute of the film. It’s just some words here and there,” stated DY Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India, while acknowledging the minor nature of the changes.
Initially, the film’s hearing was scheduled for an earlier date, but it has now been postponed to Thursday to allow the court and involved parties more time to address the modifications and finalize any pending issues.
Kangana Ranaut’s “Emergency” has received a U/A certificate from the CBFC, indicating it is suitable for viewers of all ages, albeit with parental guidance for younger children. Despite this certification, the movie’s release date remains undisclosed as additional editing requirements are addressed.
The film delves into a pivotal period in Indian history, focusing on the life and political journey of Indira Gandhi, India’s first and the only female Prime Minister to date. “Emergency” centers on the dark period of the Emergency she imposed in 1975, a time marked by political turmoil and curtailment of civil liberties, culminating in her assassination by her own bodyguards. In an exclusive interview with News 18, the actress explained, “Naturally, my film was supposed to release. I put all my personal property on it. Now that it’s not released, so anyway, that’s what properties are for – for times of crisis.” The property sale highlights the financial stakes attached to the film’s release, underlining the significant personal investment Kangana has made in bringing “Emergency” to fruition.
It is worth noting that this bungalow had been a focal point of controversy. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had partially demolished the property, citing “illegal alterations.” This demolition followed Kangana’s outspoken criticism of Uddhav Thackeray, the then-Chief Minister of Maharashtra, and her public feud with Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut, particularly surrounding the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. The BMC’s move was perceived by many as politically motivated, given the timing and Kangana’s bold statements against key political figures. Though Kangana was offered Rs 2 crores in compensation following the demolition, she refused to accept the amount.
