Manju Warrier Discusses Her Excitement and Challenges in Upcoming Film ‘Vettaiyan’

“It felt like winning a double jackpot!” This is how acclaimed Malayalam actor Manju Warrier describes her invaluable experience of joining the stellar cast of ‘Vettaiyan,’ a highly anticipated film starring the legendary Rajinikanth and directed by the celebrated TG Gnanavel. Known for his critically-acclaimed work in ‘Jai Bhim,’ Gnanavel extends his talent to helm this new project that is capturing the attention of film enthusiasts globally.

The buzz for ‘Vettaiyan’ began long before filming started, and Warrier, a revered figure in Indian cinema, shares her journey leading up to this monumental opportunity. During a phone interview from her hometown in Kochi, she shared insights about her role, “When the offer first came from Gnanavel sir’s side, I was thrilled at the opportunity to work with him. At that time, I didn’t even know that Rajini sir was involved in the film. The chance to collaborate with Gnanavel sir alone was reason enough for me to jump on board.”

Discovering that she would be acting opposite Rajinikanth was an overwhelming revelation. “I was blown away,” Warrier expressed. “It’s something I hadn’t even dared to dream about. Working alongside such a legend… words fail to express the emotion.” Warrier is set to play Thara, the on-screen spouse of Rajinikanth’s character, in a movie that has attracted a galaxy of stars including Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, and Rana Daggubati, among others.

When asked about the experience of sharing the screen with Rajinikanth for the first time, Warrier candidly admitted to feeling nervous. “I was jittery before the first shot,” she confessed. However, once the cameras rolled, her anxiety transformed into an exhilarating burst of energy. “Completing that initial sequence was a pivotal moment for me—acting opposite the Superstar himself was surreal.”

Adding another layer of excitement, the release of the lyric video for the energetic dance number ‘Manasilaayo,’ featuring Warrier alongside Rajinikanth and music composer Anirudh Ravichander, took social media by storm. “I couldn’t believe it,” she enthused.

. “This was a first for me. In the Tamil film industry, they’re used to such vibrant performances, but for me, it was an entirely new experience.” The ‘Manasilaayo’ wave has seen over 400,000 reels created on Instagram while the lyric video soared past a staggering 45 million views.

Choreographed by Dinesh, the dynamic song number was filmed over five intense days. Despite reassurances from the team that rehearsals weren’t necessary, Warrier insisted on practicing rigorously. “I wanted to be ready and not delay the shoot,” she said, reflecting the professionalism she is revered for.

Warrier’s contribution to ‘Manasilaayo’ has been hailed as a delightful surprise by fans and critics alike, who continue to rave about her eye-catching look—a vibrant red sari paired with an embroidered blouse and bold black sunglasses. Warrier credits her stylist, Liji Preman, and the ‘Vettaiyan’ team for her stunning transformation.

Discussing TG Gnanavel’s approach to blending his craftsmanship with Rajinikanth’s stardom, Warrier expressed optimism. “While I have yet to see the full movie, I anticipate a beautiful fusion of their contrasting styles. Director Gnanavel gives each character their due space,” she affirmed, rejecting the notion of being overshadowed by Rajinikanth’s iconic presence.

Warrier attributes a unique aura to Rajinikanth, describing his charisma and energy as contagious and highly inspiring. “Despite his age, he maintains an energy that impresses everyone he meets. I was touched by his interest in my own filmography and personal ventures such as my motorcycle adventures,” she added.

‘Vettaiyan’ marks Warrier’s third foray into Tamil cinema, following her performances in ‘Asuran’ (2019) with Dhanush and ‘Thunivu’ (2022) alongside Ajith Kumar. Reflecting on her rare appearances in Tamil films despite her commanding presence in the Malayalam film industry, Warrier explains her penchant for “solid characters,” opting for quality roles that resonate with her creatively.

Warrier will soon captivate audiences again in her forthcoming Tamil projects: ‘Mr X’ with Arya and Gautham Karthik, and Vetrimaaran’s ‘Viduthalai 2’ featuring Vijay Sethupathi. Fresh off a career resurgence since her return in 2014, Warrier remains one of the highest-paid talents in South Indian cinema, bridging language barriers and capturing hearts across the nation. ‘Vettaiyan’ is slated for release in theaters worldwide on October 10.
