Sanjay Leela Bhansali Reflects on Early Rejections and Opportunities in His Cinematic Journey

In an engaging discussion with The Hollywood Reporter, acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali offered a personal look back at the arduous journey that eventually crowned him as one of the distinguished directors in Indian cinema. Before he was known for his visually opulent films such as “Devdas,” “Padmaavat,” and “Gangubai Kathiawadi,” Bhansali was simply a boy from a humble Mumbai chawl, with big dreams but very little means to realize them. His climb to the pinnacle of the film industry was fraught with challenges and marked by an episode of initial rejection from none other than renowned producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra, which later turned into an opportunity that acted as a pivotal turning point in his career.

Recollecting his early days of struggle, Bhansali detailed the improbable nature of his entry into the cinematic world. “My journey was unthinkable. Imagine a boy from Bhindi Bazaar, with no social skills, connections, or influence, forging a path to the film industry. And yet, here I am. There is always a way, though it’s a long and winding path,” Bhansali shared, painting a picture of the perseverance that fueled his drive.

The narrative took a heartfelt turn as Bhansali credited a significant portion of this success to his sister. She played a critical role in bridging connections within the industry, which led to his eventual break. “My sister worked with Vidhu Vinod Chopra,” he recounted. “She approached his ex-wife, Renu Chopra, who was instrumental in compelling him to give me a chance. Initially, Vinod Chopra, true to his style, dismissed me. However, upon reconsideration, he eventually brought me on board, allowing me to work alongside him for eight formative years.

These years under the tutelage of Vidhu Vinod Chopra proved invaluable for Bhansali, shaping not only his directorial vision but also fortifying his resolve. “The time spent with him turned me into iron and steel,” Bhansali explained. “During those years, I learned resilience and fortitude. I’ve faced the toughest challenges since, confident because of that grounding. To this day, Vinod Chopra’s call demands my utmost respect and gratitude; his influence was monumental in transforming my life.”

Simultaneously, Bhansali stands on the brink of his next major release, “Love and War.” Featuring Bollywood heavyweights Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Vicky Kaushal, the film has experienced a shift from its initially announced release date. Originally slated for a Christmas 2025 premiere, Bhansali’s team recently announced that audiences will now have to wait until March 20, 2026, to see the epic saga unfold on the big screen.

For Bhansali and Ranbir Kapoor, “Love and War” marks their reunification since the actor’s debut in 2007’s “Saawariya.” While Bhatt has previously collaborated with Bhansali in the critically acclaimed “Gangubai Kathiawadi,” it will be Vicky Kaushal’s first project with the maestro. The anticipation surrounding the film has been palpable since its official announcement in January 2024, which was marked by a social media reveal featuring the signatures of its leading stars alongside a teaser message: “We Bring You Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Epic Saga ‘Love & War.’ See You At The Movies Christmas 2025.”

Bhansali’s reflection on his journey not only underscores the odds one can overcome with resilience and opportunity but also offers a prelude to what might be another crowning jewel in his directorial career. As the film industry and fans alike eagerly await the release of “Love and War,” Bhansali’s narrative serves as an inspiring reminder of the powerful transformations brought about by diligence, opportunity, and gratitude—a testament to both his journey and his art.
