The sports community in India finds itself once again at the center of a heated debate, as PT Usha, the esteemed president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), vehemently denies allegations brought forward by the IOA treasurer, Sahdev Yadav. These allegations center around a report from the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) which claims that a faulty sponsorship agreement with Reliance India Limited (RIL) resulted in a significant financial loss, amounting to Rs 24 crore, for the IOA.
In an exclusive interview with India TV, PT Usha stated firmly that she sees this claim by Sahdev Yadav as an intentional attempt to damage her reputation and that of the association she leads. “I don’t understand why he (Sahdev Yadav) is trying to defame me. He is under the scanner of CAG and is deliberately trying to tarnish my reputation,” said Usha, clearly frustrated by the unfolding events. She further emphasized her compliance with organizational protocols, asserting, “As the president of the IOA, I have taken all my steps as per the constitution of the organization. I have not put a foot wrong.”
For those unfamiliar with the situation, this controversy traces back to a sponsorship deal between the IOA and RIL. Officially documented on August 1, 2022, the agreement facilitated the alignment of RIL with the IOA as the Official Principal Partner for key sports events, including the Asian Games of 2022 and 2026, the Commonwealth Games of 2022 and 2026, as well as the Olympics in Paris and Los Angeles. The deal also entitled RIL to construct the ‘India House’ for the duration of these events. However, conflict arose when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) refused to permit the naming rights of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) House to a sponsor. Furthermore, the CAG report indicated that rights for the Winter Olympic Games of 2026 and 2030, as well as the Youth Olympic Games of 2026 and 2030, were included in the sponsorship package through a subsequent amendment to the original agreement.
Despite the allegations, PT Usha has assertively supported her actions, ensuring that the revision and amendments to the agreement with RIL were executed with all due diligence.
. She explained that the addendum to the contract was meticulously drafted under the expert guidance of Nandan Kamath, a prominent sports lawyer from NK Law, Bangalore. Additionally, she made it clear that the Acting CEO of the IOA was well-informed and kept in the loop throughout the entire process, being included in all pertinent communications.
The allegations extend beyond financial mismanagement to criticisms of PT Usha’s leadership style, with accusations of autocracy. Usha, however, has firmly denied these claims, stressing her collaborative approach within the IOA. “I am not autocratic. I have always consulted members of the IOA before taking any decision related to the organization,” she stated, pointing out her commitment to maintaining open communication and collective decision-making within the association.
