The two cricketing bodies have embraced a path towards establishing financial parity within the sport, a modern move confirmed through the signing of a highly consequential Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
As revealed by CWI in a detailed press release, the agreement entails a robust four-year plan that ambitiously targets the harmonization of international and regional match fees, captain’s allowances, team prize money, and individual awards for all West Indian cricketers irrespective of gender, by the 1st of October, 2027.
This move toward pay equity comes in the wake of a similar declaration by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in July of the previous year, committing to equal prize money in ICC tournaments for both men’s and women’s cricket. The Windies Board is notably following in the footsteps of other prominent cricket boards such as the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Cricket Australia, New Zealand Cricket, and South Africa Cricket, all of which have made strides towards introducing pay equality in their respective domains.
Dr. Kishore Shallow, President of Cricket West Indies, heralded this moment as a significant milestone in Caribbean cricket history. “This is a historic day for West Indies cricket,” he expressed enthusiastically.
