ICC reprimands India pacer Jasprit Bumrah for ‘inappropriate physical contact’ with Ollie Pope

In what turned out to be a contentious yet thrilling first Test in Hyderabad, India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah landed in hot water following an incident with England’s player of the match, Ollie Pope. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has come down hard on Bumrah, handing down a reprimand for ‘inappropriate physical contact’ during the game, signifying a breach of cricket’s standards of conduct.

The altercation occurred in the crucial 81st over, at a high-tension moment in England’s innings. In what was labeled as a deliberate act, Bumrah impeded Pope’s path between the wickets, resulting in what the ICC later termed as “inappropriate physical contact.”

According to an ICC statement, Bumrah’s action went against Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. This article specifically addresses inappropriate physical interactions involving players, support staff, umpires, match referees, or any other person present at an international match.

Faced with the allegations, Bumrah elected to admit his guilt, thereby circumventing the need for a formal hearing. Consequently, the star bowler was fined 50 percent of his match fee and received a demerit point on his disciplinary record. Given that this was Bumrah’s first offense of this nature in the preceding 24 months, the repercussion was limited to the addition of just one demerit point.

Despite this unsavory episode for Bumrah, the match bore great significance for his English counterpart, Ollie Pope. Pope’s stellar performance, scoring a mammoth 196 runs, single-handedly swung momentum in England’s favor. His previous tour to India had yielded a mere 153 runs across eight innings. This time, however, his spectacular innings was a key factor in enabling England to erase a 190-run deficit and gain a lead of 230 in the second innings.

The unexpected hero with the ball turned out to be Tom Hartley. Despite hemorrhaging runs in the first innings, Hartley found redemption in his subsequent performance, reaping seven wickets for just 62 runs. It proved a pivotal display that the Indian batsmen could not decipher, particularly struggling against his spin.

Nevertheless, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for England, as K.S. Bharat and R. Ashwin mounted a noteworthy resistance, fostering fleeting hopes of an Indian victory. Yet ultimately, England stamped their authority, sealing the win by a margin of 28 runs.

While England experienced moments of brilliance and celebratory highlights in this test match, for Bumrah and Indian cricket, the takeaway is a stark reminder of the responsibilities that players shoulder when it comes to maintaining the spirit of the game. Bumrah’s punishment not only reflects his own lapse of judgment but serves as a cautionary example for players to adhere to the established codes of conduct, ensuring that the integrity of cricket is upheld.
