‘That’s not normal’: AB de Villiers picks his India debutant for 2nd Test between Sarfaraz and Rajat Patidar

The Indian cricket team, already on the back foot after a defeat in the first Test of the five-match series against England, is grappling with a spate of player injuries and absences that has sent shockwaves through the squad. With heavyweights Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami out of the picture, the team also sustained fresh blows as KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja were recently ruled out. This series of setbacks has shifted the spotlight onto India’s middle order, reminding the young batsmen of the weight of expectations now resting on their shoulders. The spotlight intensifies particularly in Hyderabad, where the batting challenges have been conspicuous, and where at least one debutant is anticipated to step onto the field in Vizag.

The predicament has led to the inclusion of two promising candidates in the team: Rajat Patidar and Sarfaraz Khan. Patidar, a Madhya Pradesh batter who secured his place in the team as the replacement for Virat Kohli, has showcased impressive skill with twin centuries for India A. Conversely, Sarfaraz Khan, notably the top scorer in domestic red-ball cricket in recent years, received his inaugural Test call-up following Rahul’s injury. Despite Patidar’s initial seniority in selection, former South African captain AB de Villiers vocalizes his support for Sarfaraz, pointing to the player’s remarkable consistency as the key qualification for his debut.

De Villiers shared his excitement and endorsement for Sarrafaz on his YouTube channel, stating, “It’s just very exciting for me. His record in first-class cricket is quite outstanding, and if there’s a guy that deserves it, it’s certainly him.” De Villiers rattled off Khan’s impressive statistics: 66 innings, 3912 runs, an average of 69.85, including 14 hundreds and 11 fifties. “Guys, that is not normal,” he exclaimed, indicating the extraordinary nature of Khan’s performance.

While acknowledging Khan’s impressive domestic record, de Villiers also expressed realistic caution, noting, “That is a very, very good first-class record. I know it’s a big jump up to international cricket against England, on the biggest stage—I hope he gets a chance because Rajat Patidar has also been playing well.”

The decision on team selection, however, hinges on how India intends to compensate for the missing players. If the team opts for direct replacements for Rahul and Jadeja, Patidar may have a better chance given his natural fit in the top-order batting lineup. This could position Washington Sundar to step in as the spin-bowling all-rounder. Nonetheless, should the team strategy pivot towards bolstering the batting strength, there is a real possibility of both Patidar and Sarfaraz being handed their caps, with Kuldeep Yadav potentially stepping in as the third spinner—potentially at the expense of an additional pacer like Mohammed Siraj.

Reports also take a broader perspective on the prevailing conversations around team strategy and potential pitch conditions at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Vizag for the upcoming second Test.

As the Indian team forges ahead to the second Test in Vizag, all eyes will be on the selectors’ choices and the debutants’ potential to sustain the lineage of cricketing excellence in the absence of proven veterans. The narrative surrounding the team is rich with anticipation and the opportunity for new heroes to rise to the occasion as the cricketing world watches with bated breath for the outcome in Vizag.
