‘Dangal’ child star Suhani Bhatnagar dies at 19

The Indian film industry is mourning the loss of one of its young talents, Suhani Bhatnagar, who was known for her poignant performance as young Babita Phogat in the critically acclaimed film “Dangal.” At only 19 years of age, her life was tragically cut short when she passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on February 16th.

The news was confirmed by a close relative, who informed the press of her unfortunate demise but did not provide specific details about the circumstances that led to her untimely death. There were reports, however, that indicated she had suffered from complications related to a leg fracture prior to her admission to the hospital.

In a heartfelt statement, the team behind “Dangal,” including Aamir Khan’s production house, expressed their deep sadness and extended condolences to Suhani’s mother, Mrs. Pooja Bhatnagar, and her family. The production house emphasized Suhani’s indispensable contribution to the film, noting, “Dangal would have been incomplete without Suhani. You will always remain a star in our hearts. May you rest in peace.” These words were echoed across social platforms where the news stirred a wave of grieving fans and members of the Indian cinema community.

The hospital source revealed that Suhani had been under medical care since February 7th, until her condition worsened, leading to her passing on February 16th. The young actress was born in Faridabad and shot to prominence after appearing in the 2016 sports biopic, which revolved around the lives of the Phogat sisters, wrestlers who were trained by their father to achieve national success.

In “Dangal,” Suhani played the younger version of Babita Kumari alongside Zaira Wasim, who played the young Geeta Phogat. The film, which was not only a box office success but also won critical acclaim, had Aamir Khan in the role of Mahavir Singh Phogat, the patriarch of the Phogat wrestling family. The film went on to win several awards and was especially praised for its powerful performances, with Suhani’s acting being noted for its moving depth and authenticity.

Bhatnagar’s portrayal of Babita’s childhood brought her significant recognition and solidified her as a young talent in the Bollywood industry. The film tracked the journey of the Phogat sisters from their childhood, with their father’s rigorous training regimen, to their eventual victories in the wrestling arena. The older versions of the characters were played by actors Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra, who together with Suhani, formed an ensemble cast that captured the hearts of millions.

Nitesh Tiwari, the director of “Dangal,” shared his disbelief and sorrow at Suhani’s passing, remembering her as “such a happy soul, so full of life.” He sent his deepest condolences to her family during this difficult time.

Suhani had stepped away from the limelight to focus on her education after her successful film debut. It was unclear whether she had plans to return to acting after completing her studies.

The young actress’s passing has left a void in the hearts of those who worked with her and those who were moved by her performance. Her untimely departure from the world is a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the unpredictability that accompanies it. As the film community and fans around the country mourn, the legacy of her work in “Dangal” ensures that Suhani Bhatnagar’s memory will continue to shine in cinematic history.
