Sanya Malhotra remembers ‘Dangal’ actor Suhani Bhatnagar: She was so special talented

The Indian film fraternity is in mourning following the untimely passing of actress Suhani Bhatnagar, who won audiences’ hearts as the young Babita Phogat in the critically acclaimed wrestling drama ‘Dangal’. The film, which starred Aamir Khan in a groundbreaking role, went on to achieve monumental success, both domestically and internationally, amid rave reviews and a deep social impact.

Suhani Bhatnagar, the promising young talent of Bollywood, has left an indelible mark at the tender age of 19 following her battle with Dermatomyositis. This rare and severe inflammatory condition, characterized by muscle weakness and a distinctive skin rash, ultimately led to her early demise. She was receiving care at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences, where she had been admitted since February 7, and sadly passed away on February 16 due to medical complications arising from her condition.

Bhatnagar’s co-star in ‘Dangal,’ Sanya Malhotra, who portrayed the grown-up Babita Phogat, took to social media to express her disbelief and sorrow over the loss of her young counterpart. Sharing her thoughts on Instagram Stories, Malhotra penned a heartfelt message: “I can’t believe it’s real. There was no one quite like our Suhani. She was so special, so talented, and way too young to have left us so soon. Rest in peace Chotu. My deepest condolences to Pooja, Puneet and the entire family.”

A resident of Sector-17 in Faridabad, Suhani Bhatnagar’s funeral rites were conducted at the Ajronda cremation ground in the city. She had emerged as a prominent figure in the Indian entertainment landscape following her performance in ‘Dangal,’ which shed light on the true story of a wrestler, Mahavir Singh Phogat, and his journey to guide his daughters towards wrestling success.

The film also starred Zaira Wasim as the young Geeta Phogat and was complemented by Fatima Sana Shaikh, who played the elder Geeta alongside Aamir Khan, who embodied the role of their father, Mahavir Phogat, with great depth and dedication. ‘Dangal’ was not just a box office success; it became a cultural phenomenon, inspiring countless individuals and sparking conversations about gender roles in sports.

The loss of Bhatnagar has resonated deeply with the cast and crew of the film. Nitesh Tiwari, the director of ‘Dangal’, and Aamir Khan Productions have also extended their condolences over the passing of the young actress, recognizing her contribution to the film and the notable impact she had made with her performance.

Suhani Bhatnagar’s death serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of life, particularly poignant in the youth’s untimely passing. Her talent and spirit had made an indelible mark on ‘Dangal’, forever enshrining her in the hearts of moviegoers and her colleagues. Her portrayal of Babita Phogat was not just a role, but a beacon of inspiration for young girls across the country, asserting that with hard work and determination, no dream is too lofty to achieve.

As the Indian cinema industry continues to reflect on Suhani’s legacy, her brief yet significant presence on the silver screen will remain a testament to her talent and the profound narrative she helped portray through ‘Dangal’. A life, brimming with potential and taken too soon, will be honored and remembered by all those who have been moved by her performance and the movie’s powerful message.
