No IPL 2024 matches in Delhi? DC to play two home games in Visakhapatnam

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) fervor set to return, fans were eager to peruse the tightly packed schedule for the renowned cricketing showdown, commencing on March 22. Yet, as the calendar sheet for the first three weeks unfolded, showing matches up to April 7, a peculiar detail caught the cricket aficionados’ eyes – the absence of Delhi as a host city in the initial phase of the tournament was stark and unexpected.

Although the cricket celebration will begin with the heavyweight clash between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Chennai, the buzz around the capital’s team, Delhi Capitals, took a surprising turn. The franchise will not play any of its two home games at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Instead, the city of Visakhapatnam will witness these significant face-offs.

This unusual development stems from a packed calendar at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, poised to be at the core of another cricketing event, the second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), from March 5 to 17, concluding with the final match. The Delhi and Districts Cricket Association has relayed to the IPL governing council that this consecutive event hosting leaves a narrow window to ready the venue for the IPL matches that follow closely on the WPL’s heels.

The conundrum that the Capitals and their fans face is whether Delhi will host any games in the second phase of the IPL. This clarity will likely emerge only after voter ballots for the upcoming elections are cast and counting is complete, the dates of which are yet to be finalized by the election commission.

The Delhi Capitals have a formidable start to their campaign with their season-opener against Punjab Kings on March 23 in Mohali, followed by a match against Rajasthan Royals on March 28 in Jaipur. Their subsequent games will bring them to the coastal breeze of Visakhapatnam or Vizag, where they are scheduled to lock horns with CSK on March 31 and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on April 3. The final game in this segment of their schedule will pit them against Mumbai Indians on April 7, away in Mumbai.

Teams such as Gujarat Titans (GT) and RCB will also be playing five matches apiece until April 7, with KKR having a lighter load of just three games. All other teams in the competition will have played four matches by this juncture.

The sheer magnetism of the IPL stems not only from the on-field clashes but also from the off-field narratives that contribute to the drama and excitement. One recent development has been the injury to Mohammed Shami, ruling him out of IPL 2024, sparking speculations about his potential replacements in the Gujarat Titans squad.

As fans and onlookers grapple with these developments, there remains a sense of anticipation. Cricket has a way of presenting unpredictable scenarios where underdogs thrive, and plans go awry. As the IPL carnival beckons, with its glitz, glamour, and on-pitch grandeur, all teams, especially the Delhi Capitals, are poised to adapt, overcome, and aim for that prized trophy with resilient spirits and unyielding enthusiasm.
