Afghanistan Secures Historic Victory Over Australia to Keep T20 World Cup Hopes Alive

Afghanistan scripted history in a Super Eight clash of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the Arnos Vale Ground in St. Vincent and the Grenadines as they registered their first win over Australia in international cricket across formats. The game witnessed a thrilling finish as Afghanistan came back from behind to beat Australia by 21 runs.

Gulbadin Naib was the star of the show for Afghanistan as he brought his side back into the contest with a match-winning four-wicket haul. Gulbadin’s spell saw him claim the crucial wickets of Marcus Stoinis and Tim David, but his biggest of the evening was Glenn Maxwell.

Maxwell was threatening to repeat his heroics from the ODI World Cup 2023 when he scored a scintillating double hundred at Wankhede to put an end to Afghanistan’s fairytale campaign. However, Gulbadin got him caught at backward point by Noor Ahmad, much to the delight of the Afghan supporters.

Gulbadin’s final wicket turned out to be the hat-trick hero Pat Cummins. The star Afghan all-rounder dismissed Cummins on the third delivery of the 17th over to crush Australia’s hopes of making a comeback into the contest. Outperforming Cummins with the ball in hand, Gulbadin claimed the prestigious Player of the Match (POTM) award for his stellar performance.

Equally remarkable with the ball was Naveen-ul-Haq, whose right-arm pace proved to be a significant hurdle for the Australian batsmen. Naveen-ul-Haq bagged a three-wicket haul, conceding just 20 runs in his four-over spell, further solidifying Afghanistan’s dominance in the bowling department.

The foundation of Afghanistan’s memorable win was set up beautifully by an impressive 118-run stand between their openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. Both batsmen made history by equalling Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s record for the most hundred-plus stand in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history.

The Afghan pair did not stop there. They shattered the previous record for the most century stands (3) in a single edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, surpassing the milestone set by Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden, who had added two century stands during the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007.

Afghanistan seemed well on course for a 160-plus total when Australia managed to make a dramatic comeback. Riding on the back of a second consecutive T20 World Cup hat-trick by Pat Cummins, Australia restricted the Rashid Khan-led side to a total of just 148. Cummins’ hat-trick might have stolen the spotlight temporarily, but it wasn’t enough to dampen the Afghan spirits.

The Afghan side showcased a blend of youthful exuberance and seasoned experience, signaling a potential shift in the traditional powerhouses of cricket. The victory over Australia not just kept their semifinal hopes alive but also sent a strong message to other contestants in the tournament.
