Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad handed 12-month ban from ILT20

In a decision that has sent ripples through the cricketing world, young Afghan spin bowler Noor Ahmad has been sidelined with a 12-month ban from participating in the International League T20 (ILT20). This action comes as a result of Ahmad’s noncompliance with contractual obligations he had with the Sharjah Warriors. The ILT20 management made the announcement on Tuesday, laying bare the details of a dispute that has culminated in this significant sanction for the player.

As a burgeoning talent, Noor Ahmad made waves during the inaugural season of the ILT20 in January and February of 2023, plying his trade with the Sharjah Warriors. The franchise saw enough potential in Ahmad to offer him a contract extension that would ensure his place in the squad for another season, that is, for the 2024 iteration of the UAE-based league. However, negotiations fell through when Ahmad declined to pen his signature on the extension document.

Despite the impressive showcase of his skills on the field, it was off the pitch where things started unraveling for the spinner. The ILT20’s statement provided insights into the incident: “The International League T20 has banned spinner Noor Ahmad for 12 months for breaching his Player Agreement with Sharjah Warriors who had signed him for Season 1 of the tournament. Noor was offered another year’s extension by the Warriors but refused to sign the retention notice for Season 2.”

It continued, “Noor played for Sharjah Warriors in Season 1 of the ILT20 who sent him a retention notice on the same terms and conditions in accordance with the Player Agreement terms ahead of Season 2.” The refusal to commit to an extension prompted the Sharjah Warriors to seek a resolution through the ILT20’s governing structures.

The situation garnered significant attention as a Disciplinary Committee was convened to address the issue. It included key figures such as the league’s Chief Executive Officer David White, Head of Security and Anti-Corruption Col. Azam, and Member Emirates Cricket Board Zayed Abbas. Following a thorough investigation and hearings with both parties, the decision was reached to bar Noor Ahmad from participating in the league for a full calendar year. A sterner 20-month ban was initially on the cards, but leniency was applied once the panel recognized that Ahmad, a minor at the time of his initial agreement signing, may not have been fully informed by his agent of the contract’s intricate details.

Noor Ahmad’s career has been on a noteworthy trajectory as, prior to the recent conflict, he participated in the SA20 2024 with Durban Super Giants. His talents are not confined to just one league as he is expected to put on the jersey for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League 2024, a team who claimed the championship just two years prior.

As these events unfold, they present a cautionary tale for young players in the increasingly complex world of professional sports, where off-field obligations are as binding as on-field performances are exhilarating. The case of Noor Ahmad demonstrates the repercussions that can ensue when such commitments are overlooked. For now, the young Afghani prodigy’s focus will likely shift to ensuring his conduct aligns with his contractual obligations while showcasing why he has become one of the most talked-about spinners in the sphere of cricket.
