Ambati Rayudu quits YSRCP party days after joining says will stay away from politics for little while

In an abrupt development that has caught political onlookers off guard, former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu has called time on his brief political career with the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP), resigning just days after his much-publicized induction into the ruling Andhra Pradesh party. Rayudu, who bid farewell to the Indian Premier League in May 2023, stepped into the political arena on December 28, 2023, an innings that has unexpectedly proved to be short-lived.

The announcement came through a brief but clear message on social media, wherein Rayudu declared, “This is to inform everyone that I have decided to quit the YSRCP Party and stay out of politics for a little while. Further action will be conveyed in due course of time. Thank You.” Although the reasons behind this decision remain unarticulated, the cricket-star-turned-politician has indicated that he will be sidelining himself from the field of politics, at least for the time being.

Rayudu’s entry into the YSRCP fold occurred mere days after Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy inaugurated a grand 45-day sports festival named ‘Adudham Andhra’ which translates to ‘Let’s play Andhra’. Envisioned as a catalyst for sports development in the state, this festival appears to have set the stage for what seemed to be a new chapter in Rayudu’s professional life. The induction ceremony held at the Chief Minister’s camp office showcased political heavyweights such as Deputy CM K Narayana Swamy and Lok Sabha MP P Mithun Reddy, and the YSRCP warmly welcomed Rayudu into their ranks.

Before donning the political hat, Rayudu had a successful cricketing stint, particularly with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their 2023 IPL season. Illustrative of his sportsmanship and contribution, he played a pivotal role in CSK’s title victory that year. Ahead of the season finale, the fiercely competitive player made his intentions clear about ending his IPL journey. Rayudu’s heartfelt farewell note to his fans and the competition read, “2 great teams mi and csk,204 matches,14 seasons,11 playoffs,8 finals,5 trophies. hopefully 6th tonight. It’s been quite a journey. I have decided that tonight’s final is going to be my last game in the IPL. I truly have enjoyed playing this great tournament. Thank you all. No U-turn.”

Despite the finality of his words then, it now seems Rayudu is taking a U-turn, at least in political context. His decision to leave YSRCP and take a ‘little while’ off from politics has sparked speculation among pundits and the public alike, curious about the motivations for his sudden departure and potential next steps.

While the dust settles around this unanticipated move by Ambati Rayudu, political commentators are analyzing the implications of his withdrawal. What could this mean for YSRCP, the party that thought it had scored a significant player in its ranks? And will this “little while” away from politics ultimately lead to a return, or has Rayudu decided to retire from the public service field as definitively as he did from cricket?

For now, Ambati Rayudu remains a celebrated cricketer whose sprint into the political stadium has been as swift as it was surprising. Time will tell if Rayudu decides to lace up for another innings in the political pitch or chooses to stay in the pavilion, away from the public gaze and the hurly-burly of political strategizing. What remains clear, however, is the indelible mark he has left in the hearts of cricket fans, a legacy that will remain, irrespective of his political affiliations or career choices.
