As the excitement for IPL 2024 builds, all eyes are on the Delhi Capitals, a team that is asking itself a question akin to the one that haunts the Royal Challengers Bangalore: “Is this our year?” The Capitals faced a grim season last year, languishing at the second-to-last spot, with their batting lineup failing spectacularly—from a dysfunctional top order to a virtually absent middle order.
Delhi undertook a necessary roster overhaul before the IPL 2024 auction, roping in a mix of high-quality and utility players. However, the elephant in the room remains player availability, much like it does for several other teams. The spotlight is squarely on Rishabh Pant as he makes a comeback into cricket after recovering from a life-threatening accident—an event that took him out of the game for a startling 14 months. His tale of surgeries, recovery, and rehab is nothing short of miraculous, and Delhi hopes for him to hit the ground running.
Let’s dissect the Delhi Capitals’ prospects: can they challenge the other nine teams for a playoff spot? In a conundrum that’s hard to fathom, Delhi boasts strengths in both batting and bowling but fails to appear as a cohesive powerhouse. Established names such as David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant, and newcomer Tristan Stubbs form an enviable top five. But the team was Pant-less last year, and the young wicketkeeper-batsman hasn’t played competitive cricket in more than a year.
Marsh, Shaw, and Warner all had a lackluster previous season, often exposing the middle order early in the powerplay. Yet, if Shaw finds form and Warner continues his streak, backed by Marsh’s renewed touch and Stubbs’ explosive SA20 performance, the batting could be formidable. Axar Patel provides not just batting depth but a minimum of six overs of quality bowling within the top six. Delhi has the luxury of fielding either a specialist batsman or playing an all-rounder in the form of Sumit Kumar at No. 7.
Their pace battery includes Khaleel Ahmed, Ishant Sharma, Mukesh Kumar, Rasikh Dar, Anrich Nortje, and Jhye Richardson—with hopes for an additional paceman to fill in for Harry Brook. The spin duo of Axar and Kuldeep Yadav may well be the second-best in the tournament. But the strengths are also their weaknesses: after the top six, the batting lineup thins. Backups like Yash Dhull and Lalit Yadav offer little reassurance, and 19-year-old Kumar Kushagra is yet to prove his mettle at this level.
Delhi’s pace attack beyond Ahmed is riddled with uncertainty. With Sharma aging and Nortje’s availability in question, the team might lack experience and quality when most needed. Richardson’s fitness, following an injury hiatus, will be a decisive factor, but Delhi is in dire need of an elite pace bowler to replace Brook and beef up their bowling.
Eventual playoff qualification will require every department to consistently deliver. The coaching staff and captain will need to extract top performances from the resources at their disposal. Enter Tristan Stubbs—the multidimensional player likened to Glenn Phillips. He bats, bowls off-spin, keeps wicket, and is electric in the field. His acquisition at INR 50 lakh was a bargain, and with no Brook, Stubbs is posed to make an immediate impact, hopefully replicating his SA20 heroics.
The Capitals’ batting lineup floundered last season, but with added options and reserves like Shai Hope and Jake Fraser-McGurk, they might fare better. Still, uncertainties loom large, and only a strong tournament start could alleviate doubt. While the bowling might hold steady, it’s essential that batters come together, and much will hinge on Pant’s shoulders—the emotional backdrop of his return notwithstanding.

Rishabh Pant(w/c), Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Tristan Stubbs, Yash Dhull, Lalit Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, Pravin Dubey, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Khaleel Ahmed, Anrich Nortje, Jhye Richardson, Shai Hope, Vicky Ostwal, Mukesh Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Abishek Porel, Ricky Bhui, Kumar Kushagra, Rasikh Salam, Sumit Kumar, Swastik Chhikara
The team looks better placed this season and, with some introspection and strategic gameplay, could propel themselves into the upper echelons of the league. Yet, as always in cricket, potential is one thing—execution is another. The Delhi Capitals ride into the IPL 2024 with revamped vigor, but they’ll need more than just optimism to vanquish the ghosts of seasons past.
