The spotlight is squarely on Rishabh Pant as he makes a comeback into cricket after recovering from a life-threatening accident—an event that took him out of the game for a startling 14 months. His tale of surgeries, recovery, and rehab is nothing short of miraculous, and Delhi hopes for him to hit the ground running.
Let’s dissect the Delhi Capitals’ prospects: can they challenge the other nine teams for a playoff spot? In a conundrum that’s hard to fathom, Delhi boasts strengths in both batting and bowling but fails to appear as a cohesive powerhouse. Established names such as David Warner, Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, Rishabh Pant, and newcomer Tristan Stubbs form an enviable top five. But the team was Pant-less last year, and the young wicketkeeper-batsman hasn’t played competitive cricket in more than a year.
Marsh, Shaw, and Warner all had a lackluster previous season, often exposing the middle order early in the powerplay. Yet, if Shaw finds form and Warner continues his streak, backed by Marsh’s renewed touch and Stubbs’ explosive SA20 performance, the batting could be formidable. Axar Patel provides not just batting depth but a minimum of six overs of quality bowling within the top six. Delhi has the luxury of fielding either a specialist batsman or playing an all-rounder in the form of Sumit Kumar at No. 7.
Their pace battery includes Khaleel Ahmed, Ishant Sharma, Mukesh Kumar, Rasikh Dar, Anrich Nortje, and Jhye Richardson—with hopes for an additional paceman to fill in for Harry Brook.
