BCCI Maintains Its Status as the Richest Cricket Board Globally
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) continues to hold the position of the world’s wealthiest cricket board. Within the framework of the ICC’s yearly revenue distribution, the Indian board consistently claims the lion’s share. The recent announcement projected a staggering USD 230 million annual income for BCCI during the 2024-27 cycle. However, such monumental earnings inevitably translate into substantial tax contributions to the government. The precise figure? It has been disclosed that BCCI paid a substantial Rs 1,159 crore in income tax during the fiscal year 2021-22.
In response to an inquiry in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary, furnished a comprehensive breakdown of BCCI’s income tax payments, along with its financial inflows and outflows over the past five years as documented in its returns.
It’s noteworthy that revenue stemming from the ICC revenue pool forms just one tributary to BCCI’s financial stream. The Indian Premier League (IPL) remains another veritable cash cow for the cricket board, generating significant financial inflows. The IPL stands as the world’s most lucrative cricket league, capturing remarkable attention both from players and sponsors. Moreover, its ascendancy is projected to gain further momentum in the forthcoming years.
Reviewing the fiscal year 2020-21, BCCI’s income tax expenditure amounted to Rs 844.92 crore, marginally lower than the Rs 882.29 crore paid in the preceding year, 2019-20.
During FY2019, the board’s tax contributions totaled Rs 815.08 crore, a marked increase from the Rs 596.63 crore paid in 2017-18.
In the financial landscape of 2021-22, BCCI’s total revenue stood at Rs 7,606 crore, juxtaposed with an expenditure nearing Rs 3,064 crore. Contrasting this, in 2020-21, the board registered an income of Rs 4,735 crore, counterbalanced by an expenditure of Rs 3,080 crore. The BCCI’s financial trajectory underscores its substantial role within the cricketing and economic domains, solidifying its position as a heavyweight in both arenas.
