Call for Comeback: Shadab Khan Appeals to Imad Wasim for National Duty

With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on the horizon, to be held in June across the USA and the Caribbean, the clamor within Pakistan cricket circles is intensifying for the return of a veteran allrounder. Imad Wasim, who recently stepped away from the Pakistani international scene, has become a subject of a persuasive campaign by his peers to don the national colors once more.

An impressive performance in the Pakistan Super League’s ninth installment, where Wasim shone for his team, has not gone unnoticed. Shadab Khan, who captains Islamabad United and is a teammate of Wasim in the PSL, loudly echoes the sentiment that Imad’s presence would greatly enhance Pakistan’s prospects in the upcoming global competition.

“I discussed it with him when he made his decision; I wanted him to stay on the team,” Shadab disclosed, as reported by the International Cricket Council (ICC). “Pakistan is in need of seasoned players like Imad. God willing, if discussions progress with him, it is my hope he will decide to come back. His recent PSL performance, coupled with his extensive experience garnered in the Caribbean Premier League, makes him an invaluable asset Pakistan cannot afford to overlook.”

Pakistan’s conquest of the T20 World Cup in 2009 still resonates with Pakistani fans, and with the next iteration of the tournament approaching, a player of Imad’s repertoire of skills could be a crucial piece in the quest to replicate that triumph.

Imad Wasim himself has expressed his willingness to reverse his retirement decision should the team require his services. This sentiment comes in the wake of an approach by none other than Shaheen Shah Afridi, the current T20I captain for Pakistan, who reached out to Wasim after his retirement announcement.

Making a clear statement of his commitment, Imad stated, “I gained recognition through my performances for Pakistan, and if there’s a need for me, I am ready to answer the call. If not, I am at peace with my decision.” He also mentioned his post-retirement conversation with Shaheen, stating, “Shaheen contacted me after I retired, but we agreed to discuss the matter after PSL concludes.”

As an experienced spin-bowling allrounder, Wasim’s career has been marked by his ability to contribute with both bat and ball. His expertise, particularly in conditions similar to those expected in the Caribbean, could provide the tactical flexibility and depth Pakistan might need to navigate the varied challenges of a World Cup campaign.

Pakistan’s international schedule does not ease up, with the team expected to tackle a five-match T20I home series against New Zealand starting on April 18 in Rawalpindi. This upcoming series offers potential for Wasim to reintegrate into the side and once again showcase his ability at the highest level.

While fans and players alike reflect on Wasim’s glittering career and the possibility of an international encore, other cricketing news continues to unfold. Aspects like Wanindu Hasaranga’s retirement U-turn, Virat Kohli’s aspirations to win the IPL, and the injury ruling out a veteran Bangladesh batter from a Test series against Sri Lanka provide ongoing drama in the sport.

The cricketing world awaits Wasim’s decision with anticipation, hoping that a player who has served Pakistan with such distinction may once again step onto the field to represent his country. Whether this persuasive plea from his teammates and the weight of national expectation sway his decision remains to be seen, casting a spotlight on the complex interplay between personal choices and the call of duty in professional sport.
