Deepti Sharma and Beth Mooney register gains in ICC Women’s T20I Rankings

In a significant reshuffle of the ICC Women’s T20I bowling rankings, India’s accomplished allrounder Deepti Sharma has made an impressive leap to claim the joint second position. Mirroring Sharma’s success is Pakistan’s adept left-arm off-spinner Sadia Iqbal, who shares the coveted second spot, showcasing the diverse talent emerging from the subcontinent.

Sarah Glenn of England, known for her precise leg-spin bowling, has also made notable strides, advancing to the much-coveted fourth place in the rankings. The shifts in the rankings are a testament to the dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of women’s cricket on the international stage.

The recent T20I series between powerhouses South Africa and Australia has spurred several critical changes within the rankings, signifying the impact of head-to-head clashes on the international reckoning. Annabel Sutherland, Australia’s emerging talent, has seen a substantial jump, springing six places to now sit at 34th. Meanwhile, South Africa’s Marizanne Kapp has also made gains to reach the 40th spot, underscoring her importance to the Proteas setup.

As the proverbial tides turn, Australia’s star wicketkeeper-batter Beth Mooney has recaptured the pinnacle of the batting rankings. Mooney’s breathtaking form, which has been on full display in her recent half-centuries, has propelled her to the top position once more. Her decisive 45-ball 52* in Navi Mumbai played a pivotal role in sealing both the match and the series for the Alyssa Healy-led Australian team with a 2-1 victory.

Not to be overshadowed by her prowess behind the wickets, Mooney’s performance with the bat in hand has been nothing short of extraordinary. Opening the series against South Africa at the Manuka Oval, she carved out a masterful 72* off 57 deliveries. With 11 fours and a six, Mooney stood undefeated, guiding Australia to a comfortable eight-wicket triumph in the final over. This dominant display earned the 30-year-old southpaw the Player of the Match award, a deserved accolade for her composed innings.

Still in the limelight, but with a focus on the rankings for batters, Tahlia McGrath holds her ground as the second-best batter in the rankings. South Africa’s captain Laura Wolvaardt, too, had a spotlight moment, maintaining the third slot with a career-high rating after a Player of the Match performance in the 2nd T20I. The pressure was on with South Africa chasing a target of 143 runs; however, Wolvaardt remained unfazed, steering her team home with a commanding six wickets to spare in Canberra. It was a momentous victory, marking South Africa’s first-ever win over Australia in the women’s circuit.

The shifts in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings are not merely numbers moving up and down a leaderboard; they capture the stories of individuals and teams as they vie for supremacy in a fiercely competitive arena. These rankings tell tale of hard-fought battles, strategic acumen, and the sheer will to rise to the top echelons of the sport. With each game and series, the anticipation grows, as does the excitement for what the future holds for these remarkable cricketers and the teams they represent. The ongoing clashes and individual triumphs are a prelude to the enthralling narratives yet to unfold on cricketing grounds around the world.
