With high hopes to clinch the title in the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024, Delhi Capitals (DC), the team that stood second in the debut season, unveiled their latest jersey with much fanfare. The new jersey, echoing the design of their male counterparts from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, exhibited familiar tones of half-red and half-blue, continuing the franchise’s visual legacy.
The jersey launch was no low-key affair, as the team members donned the newly designed kit adorned with their latest sponsor’s branding. In a significant move, sports apparel giant PUMA has come on board to deck out the squad, signing a multi-year contract that extends PUMA’s involvement with both the women’s and men’s teams of the Delhi Capitals.
With the principal sponsorship coming from DP World, the jersey is distinguished by striking red sleeves and side panels, while the front, back, and even the pants are arrayed in a vibrant blue. The distinctive PUMA logo is also prominently displayed on the sleeves, heralding a new chapter in the team’s aesthetics.
As they step up to bat once again at the prestigious tournament, the Delhi Capitals are determined to rewrite last year’s near-victory into a championship triumph. The players — a mix of seasoned veterans and fresh talent — radiate readiness, retaining much of the strong squad from previous seasons while also welcoming the prowess of Australian all-rounder Annabel Sutherland into their fold. Sutherland recently made headlines with a groundbreaking double century in a Test match against South Africa.
The 2024 WPL season holds particular excitement for the Capitals, as they will have the opportunity to showcase their talents before the spirited Delhi home crowd, with tournament fixtures scheduled in both Bangalore and the national capital. The inaugural match of the season sets DC head-to-head with the defending champions, Mumbai Indians, inviting a sense of déjà vu as the teams clash in a repeat of last year’s finale at the legendary M Chinnaswamy Stadium on February 23.
The season is arranged such that the initial 11 matches are slated to occur in Bangalore, the Garden City, following which the action will shift to Delhi for the remaining 11 games, which include the high-stakes eliminator and the eagerly anticipated final.
Calling upon their formidable line-up, the Delhi Capitals have an embarrassment of riches in their squad for the 2024 season. Spearheaded by captain Meg Lanning, the roster features powerhouse players like Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues serving as the vice-captain, Alice Capsey, Marizanne Kapp, Jess Jonassen, and Laura Harris. They’re flanked by the adeptness of Taniya Bhatia, Aparna Mondal, Ashwani Kumari, Radha Yadav, Arundhati Reddy, Shikha Pandey, Sneha Deepthi, Poonam Yadav, Minnu Mani, and the recent addition Titas Sadhu.
As the team gears up for the upcoming season, their indomitable spirit and the infusion of new talent like Annabel Sutherland promise exciting possibilities. With hopes running high and the new jersey emblematic of their ambitions, the Delhi Capitals are all set to transform their potential into victories on the field in the WPL 2024.
