EXPLAINED: Why there’s no India vs Pakistan clash in U19 WC Super Six despite both teams being in same group

The group stage of the Under-19 Cricket World Cup has seen young talent from across the globe showcase their skills in a total of 24 matches. This stage of the tournament wrapped up with India and Australia securing victories in their final group encounters, with India convincingly defeating the USA and Australia overcoming Sri Lanka.

India emerged with an impeccable record, claiming the top spot in Group A, while the USA, despite their efforts, finished without a point and became the only team to be eliminated after the group stage. The tournament structure allows the top three teams from each group to advance to the next phase, known as the Super Six, where a total of 12 teams are split into two separate groups. Group A and Group D have melded into one group while Group B and Group C have combined into another.

In this newly shaped stage, India finds itself in a group with Bangladesh, Ireland, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Nepal. Meanwhile, the other group is populated by South Africa, England, West Indies, Australia, Sri Lanka, and Zimbabwe. Despite sharing the same group, fans won’t see the much-anticipated India vs Pakistan match quite yet due to the format of the Super Six stage.

This Super Six phase introduces an interesting twist in the tournament’s progression. Teams carry forward the points only from their matches against the other qualifying teams. For example, India starts with four points banked from their wins over Bangladesh and Ireland. However, Ireland begins without any points as they did not secure a win against fellow qualifiers Bangladesh and India.

Another twist is that each team will only face two opponents from the other merging group, specifically those teams that finished in different positions compared to themselves within their own groups. Therefore, India, which finished at the summit of Group A (A1), will play against the second and third teams from Group D (D2 and D3), being New Zealand and Nepal. This means they will not face the top team from Group D, Pakistan. Bangladesh (A2) will encounter Pakistan and Nepal, but not New Zealand, and so on.

This innovative format, crafted by the International Cricket Council (ICC), rewards teams for their performance in the group stages by giving them a head start into the Super Six. However, this new structure has taken away the immediate possibility of a high-voltage India-Pakistan match, leaving many fans waiting with bated breath. The hope for a clash between the two arch-rivals now hinges on both sides successfully navigating the Super Six to reach the semifinal stage.

Further cricket news headlines feature important updates like the ICC lifting the suspension on Sri Lanka Cricket, allowing them to return to international play. Former Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid has had to defend the Indian middle order’s performance after a recent loss, while Carlos Brathwaite has responded to comments from Rodney Hogg following a significant Test win.

India’s pursuit of the U19 World Cup title will continue as they square off against New Zealand in Bloemfontein on January 30. This match will be the first Super Six encounter for the Indian side. Their second match in this phase will see them take on Nepal on February 5, again at the same venue. The Super Six stage concludes on February 6, at the end of which the top teams will advance to the semifinals, with hopes that fans may still witness an electrifying India vs Pakistan matchup in the tournament.
