In a move that has taken the cricketing fraternity by surprise, Yash Dhull, the young cricket prodigy who led India’s U19 squad to World Cup glory, has been discharged from his duties as the captain of the Delhi Ranji team. This development comes on the heels of a disappointing loss to Puducherry in the Ranji Trophy opener of the 2024 season. Himmat Singh, a seasoned right-handed batter, has been called upon to fill the captaincy role, with his first challenge being the upcoming match against Jammu & Kashmir.
The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has made this bold move reflecting a swift change in strategy. Only aged 21, Dhull would have anticipated more backing from the DDCA, expecting a longer tenure to prove his leadership mettle on the domestic front. However, the association’s joint secretary, Rajan Manchanda, unveiled the motives behind the decision in a statement to PTI. “Yash is a talented player but is out of form,” Manchanda explained. The board’s intent is for Dhull to refocus on his batting, thereby hoping to see an upswing in his performance with the bat unburdened by captaincy duties.
The decision comes especially as a shock because of the timing – with Delhi having the golden opportunity to make an assertive start to their Ranji Trophy campaign, hosting Puducherry at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Unfortunately for Delhi and Dhull, home ground did not translate into home advantage; the team faltered quite spectacularly, collapsing to a mere 148 all out within 62.5 overs in their first innings. Dhull’s personal contribution was particularly underwhelming, with a mere two runs to his name.
This setback was further compounded by Puducherry’s Gaurav Yadav’s outstanding performance. The seamer tore through Delhi’s batting lineup, claiming seven wickets and conceding only 49 runs in his near 27 overs spell, guiding his team to a formidable position. Despite admirable efforts from Delhi’s bowlers, Puducherry secured a lead of 104 runs which proved pivotal as the game progressed.
The second innings did not pan out any better for Dhull or Delhi. While Dhull managed a meagre 23 off 40 balls, failing to anchor his team or contribute a significant score, Delhi as a whole weren’t able to reverse their fortunes. Bundled out for 145 in their second innings, Delhi could only set a paltry target of 50 runs for Puducherry to chase. The visitors breezed past the required runs, losing only one wicket in the process, delivering a clear and humiliating defeat to the hosts.
