George Bailey hints at T20 World Cup 2024 spot for new RCB signing

The landscape of Australian cricket is continually transformed by emerging talents, and one name repeatedly garners attention—Cameron Green. With an eye towards the T20 World Cup 2024, Green’s name is on everyone’s lips, particularly after the national selector for Australia, George Bailey, mentioned on February 9 that the all-rounder is ‘in the mix’ for selection.

Cameron Green, at the ripe age of 24, has become a mainstay in Australia’s Test and ODI squads yet last featured in T20Is back in November 2022. Despite his limited presence in the T20 format, with just eight matches for Australia since debuting in April 2022 where he scored a modest 139 runs and captured five wickets, his overall impact can’t be ignored.

Surprisingly, Green was absent from Australia’s current T20I series against the West Indies, a decision that has not gone unnoticed given his formidable showings in both ODIs and Tests recently. With the upcoming T20 World Cup on the horizon, only five months away, there is a sense of urgency to finalize the 15-member squad that will represent Australia.

Bailey tackled inquiries about Green’s World Cup chances optimistically, indicating the significance of Green’s participation in the IPL 2024. Bailey cited the importance of accumulating a substantial amount of T20 cricket experience, which the IPL is set to provide.

The selector stated, “Yes, very firmly. We know he’s going to go to the IPL and getting a big batch of T20 cricket in,” signaling that Green’s impending performance in the high-profile league would be crucial. Bailey added, “It’s a constant conversation with multi-format players, working out the priority at any given time, and making sure they get what they need but he’s certainly one whose name I think, as we are finalizing that 15 for the World Cup, will be firmly in the mix.”

The multi-dimensional prowess of Cameron Green has not been lost on the selectors or the cricketing world. Bailey extolled the player’s skill across all formats and expressed confidence in his growth with continued exposure. He did, however, caution that as with any athlete, there would be ups and downs. Bailey recounted Green’s intense past two years, featuring non-stop travel with the team, and anticipated further development in the player’s game.

Green’s capabilities were on full display during his Indian Premier League debut in 2023, where he churned out an impressive 452 runs at an average of 50.22 and a strike rate of 160.28, while representing the Mumbai Indians. His market value, underscored by an INR 17.50 crore transfer, led to a switch to the Royal Challengers Bangalore prior to the December 2023 player auction.

It’s beyond stats, though; the cricket community perceives Green as a potential game-changer, blending formidable batting prowess with useful bowling versatility, capable of tilting matches in his team’s favor. His journey from a promising debutant to a sought-after all-rounder in the worlds’ premier T20 league has been marked by steady progression and adaptation.

While the T20 format has seen limited contributions from Green thus far, it’s the anticipation of what he could deliver on the global stage of the World Cup that has aficionados and analysts keenly waiting. With the IPL as a testing ground and developmental platform, Green has the opportunity to sharpen his skills further and prove that he is not just ‘in the mix’ but a pivotal piece of Australia’s T20 puzzle.

As the clock ticks down to the T20 World Cup 2024, all eyes will be on Green’s performance in the IPL to gauge whether he’ll secure his spot on the prestigious team. The stakes are high, but Green has shown that he is more than capable of rising to the occasion, and potentially, playing a central role in Australia’s pursuit of T20 glory.
