ICC lifts Sri Lanka Cricket’s suspension with immediate effect

The international cricket community received notable updates this Sunday, January 28th, as the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the reinstatement of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC)’s full membership privileges. This decision comes after the suspension placed on SLC in November, following their last group stage match at the 2023 World Cup against New Zealand.

The ICC’s pivotal action in lifting the suspension was in response to a detailed 112-page report by the Auditor General of Sri Lanka, which accused the SLC of serious misgovernance, widespread corruption, and financial mismanagement. The controversy led to the dismissal of SLC President Shammi Silva during the height of the World Cup, and an ensuing legal battle regarding his sacking. Despite the turmoil and reinstatement, the ICC felt compelled to uphold the suspension until they were convinced SLC had remedied the breaches of its obligations.

Interestingly, even while under suspension, the ICC permitted the Sri Lankan national cricket team to participate in matches, but administrative repercussions were still felt. Notably, the SLC lost the prestigious hosting rights for the Under-19 World Cup 2024, which were consequentially granted to South Africa. During the period of uncertainty, the senior Sri Lankan team competed against Zimbabwe, and the junior team partook in the Under-19 World Cup. However, both were representative of a cricket board in limbo, anxiously awaiting the ICC’s decision to lift the ban.

The ICC conveyed its approval of the current state of SLC in a formal release, stating, “The ICC Board has been monitoring the situation since the suspension and are now satisfied that SLC are no longer in breach of membership obligations.” This pronouncement reflects a satisfactory resolution to the issues of autonomy and governance. The reinstatement means that SLC is once again in good standing with the ICC, allowing a full resumption of its functions and rights as a board member.

This included adherence to regulations requiring the management of cricket affairs to be autonomous, ensuring no government interference in the administration or regulation of cricket in Sri Lanka. It was this critical requirement SLC was initially found to have violated, prompting the ICC’s response.

Despite these administrative hurdles, the Sri Lanka cricket teams continued to show resilience and determination on the field. The under-19 team’s participation in their World Cup despite the circumstances was a testament to the young players’ commitment to the sport and their country.

With the restoration of full ICC membership, SLC now looks forward to hosting upcoming home series, beginning with Afghanistan on February 2nd. This series promises cricket enthusiasts a thrilling set of matchups, including one Test, three One Day Internationals (ODIs), and as many T20 Internationals (T20Is). Fans and players alike will undoubtedly be eager to turn the page on the recent challenges and focus on the bright future of cricket in Sri Lanka.

Cricket’s international scene continues to evolve with teams from around the globe experiencing significant triumphs and setbacks. Among other notable cricket news, England celebrated an extraordinary Test victory which their captain Ben Stokes heralded as one of the country’s greatest triumphs. Meanwhile, India’s unexpected defeat brought discussions about captaincy and key player Virat Kohli to the forefront of sports media.

The lifting of SLC’s suspension marks a significant turn of fortune for Sri Lankan cricket and serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between governance and the spirit of sport. It underscores the importance of both regulation and passion in the world of international cricket. Sri Lanka moving forward can once again focus exclusively on the game and its role in fostering talent and competition on a global stage.
