ICC Reveals T20 World Cup 2024 Warm-Up Fixtures: England Pakistan and New Zealand to Skip

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially released an extensive 16-game schedule for the warm-up matches ahead of the highly anticipated Men’s T20 World Cup, which will unfold across the Caribbean and the USA. Of the 20 teams participating in the tournament, 17 will engage in these preparatory matches. Notably absent are England, Pakistan, and New Zealand, who have opted to skip the warm-up fixtures.

England and Pakistan are currently engaged in a four-match T20 series in the UK, which the teams believe will adequately prepare them for the World Cup. New Zealand, however, has decided against participating in the warm-ups due to the significant travel time to the Americas, a decision attributed to their coach, Gary Stead.

Among the prominent teams, India, the West Indies, and South Africa will each play just one warm-up game. India is set to face Bangladesh, while co-hosts, the West Indies, will clash with Australia on June 30 in Tarouba. South Africa has chosen to play an intra-squad match as part of their preparation, in addition to their preceding three-match T20 series against the West Indies.

In a departure from past practices, the ICC has allowed teams the flexibility to decide the number of warm-up matches they wish to play. Traditionally, teams participate in a couple of these fixtures to gear up for the main event. This year’s warm-up matches are slated to be held at three venues: the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, a couple of locations in the USA, specifically Dallas and Florida. The venue for the India-Bangladesh game remains undecided, though it is expected to be the newly constructed stadium in New York, pending final checks and approvals.

Each warm-up match holds significant importance as it offers teams the chance to adapt to the conditions they will face during the World Cup. Additionally, these matches provide an opportunity for players to fine-tune their skills, and team management to finalize their strategies.

The World Cup warm-up matches in the USA are a historic milestone as cricket continues its global expansion. The USA venues, including the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium in Texas and the Broward County Stadium in Florida, will spotlight cricket’s growing popularity in North America. The matches are expected to draw crowds and provide a platform for local fans to witness high-level cricket up close.

The uncertainty surrounding the venue for the India vs. Bangladesh game also adds an element of excitement and anticipation. If finalized for New York, it would mark the first significant cricket match played at the newly built stadium, further cementing cricket’s footprint in the USA.

With teams like England, Pakistan, and New Zealand opting out of traditional warm-up games, there will be a keen interest in how this affects their performance in the main event. Conversely, teams participating in these warm-up matches, like India and the West Indies, will be keen to utilize these fixtures to their advantage, seeking to gain momentum and fine-tune their strategies.

In conclusion, the announcement of the warm-up schedule sets the stage for a thrilling build-up to the T20 World Cup 2024. Cricket fans worldwide will be eagerly following these matches as teams prepare to vie for the prestigious trophy, ensuring an exhilarating and competitive tournament in the Caribbean and the USA.
