ICC Test Rankings: Rohit Sharma out of top 10 India’s tormentor in finals Travis Head gains big

The International Cricket Council’s (ICC) recent amendments to the Test rankings have led to a significant ascendancy for Australia’s Travis Head, notably acclaimed as the Player of the Final in both last year’s World Test Championship and World Cup. His remarkable elevation of seven spots now sees him claiming a spot in the top five rank-holders amongst Test batters worldwide.

The prolific rise of Head was precipitated by his exceptional performance during a pivotal match where, amidst an unanticipated batting collapse, he surged forward with an indomitable match-winning score of 119 runs against the West Indies. This contribution was instrumental in procuring Australia a crucial 94-run lead, ultimately constituting the decisive advantage that propelled his team to victory.

The upward mobility of Head in the rankings had a domino effect on his peers. Pakistani stalwart and erstwhile skipper Babar Azam witnessed a descent by two positions, landing at the 10th rank, while former Indian captain Virat Kohli was nudged down to the 7th spot. Joining the downward trend was current Indian captain Rohit Sharma, whose performance in two tests against South Africa—culminating in scores of 5, 0, 39, and an unbeaten 16—resulted in him slipping off from the top 10 to find himself at the 11th position.

On the Caribbean front, West Indies captain also experienced a drop in standing, falling four places down the rank ladder, signaling lesser fortunes for the Caribbeans in the latest update. Contrasting these declines, Australian cricket appeared impacted on multiple fronts. The now-retired opener David Warner saw a decrease by two ranks. Australian wicketkeeper and batter Alex Carey was not spared either, taking a three-place hit in the batting order.

Turning attention towards the bowlers, the latest rankings represented a mixed bag for the Australian pace attack. Right-arm speedster Josh Hazlewood, owing to a sensational nine-wicket haul at the Adelaide Test against the West Indies, elevated his stance by three notches to secure the 4th position. However, his counterpart, and left-arm pacer, Josh Hazlewood was dealt a less favorable hand as he stumbled by two spots, vacating the sanctuary of the coveted top 10. Hazlewood’s resurgence in ranks had a ripple effect, causing a one-place slip for each of his contemporaries which included Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Ollie Robinson, and James Anderson, all of whom, however, managed to cling onto their top 10 statuses.

The aforementioned shifts and fluctuations in batting and bowling rankings weren’t the sole changes signified by the ICC’s update. A similar recalibration occurred within the league of all-rounders as well, where Mitchell Starc’s exclusion from the top 10 was a notable change, his place taken by England’s Chris Woakes who proudly returned to the 10th rank.

Beyond the individual ranking updates, other notable stories in the world of cricket have surfaced. England’s Ben Stokes was recorded for an unfortunate achievement on the first day of the Hyderabad Test. In the face of such contrasts, Usman Khawaja of Australia trounced Travis Head and India’s R Ashwin for the accolade of Test Cricket of the Year.

The future generation of cricket also had their share of the limelight with the U19 World Cup 2024 seeing India registering an emphatic victory over Ireland by 201 runs, thereby comfortably progressing to the Super Six stages. With the dynamic shifts in the rankings and the myriad of events occurring in the cricketing spectrum, the air is rife with anticipation and the unmistakable sense of a thrilling season ahead.
